Health New Zealand is seeking an experienced Payroll Support Lead to manage a team of eight payroll professionals and ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll operations within a large organisation.

Based in Wellington, the role leads payroll processing, compliance, QA, and process improvements while collaborating with HR, Finance, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Extensive people leadership and team management experience.
• Deep knowledge of NZ payroll legislation (Holidays Act 2003, ERA, Wages Protection Act, Parental Leave Act, KiwiSaver).
• Proven payroll compliance, quality assurance, and continuous improvement experience.
• Experience with large, complex payroll environments.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Job Overview

Health New Zealand is seeking an experienced Payroll Support Lead to manage a team of eight payroll professionals and ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll operations within a large, complex organisation.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and support payroll specialists and administrators.
• Oversee payroll processing, reconciliations, employee transfers, leave payments, third-party payments, and IR filings.
• Ensure payroll compliance, quality assurance, auditing, and risk management.
• Maintain payroll controls and drive process improvements.
• Resolve escalated payroll issues and strengthen team performance.
• Collaborate with HR, Finance, Payroll Managers, and other stakeholders.

Key Requirements

• Extensive people leadership and team management experience.
• Minimum 10 years of New Zealand payroll experience.
• At least 5 years of experience in a large, complex payroll environment.
• Strong knowledge of New Zealand payroll legislation, including the Holidays Act 2003, Employment Relations Act, Wages Protection Act, Parental Leave Act, and KiwiSaver legislation.
• Proven experience in payroll compliance, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.
• Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
• Healthcare sector experience and knowledge of AMS Leader or UKG Dimensions will be an advantage.
