Employer: Swimgym
Coaching Programme: HPK Swim Club
Location: East Auckland
Hours: Approximately 10 hours per week | Monday–Friday, 5.45–8.00pm
Position: Part-time paid coaching role or university internship/placement
Swimgym’s Promise: Swim Well. Swim Fast. Swim Safe.
Want to develop the next generation of competitive swimmers?
Swimgym is looking for a Development Swim Coach / Coaching Intern to join the coaching team working with developing competitive swimmers at HPK Swim Club.
This is a genuine pool-deck coaching opportunity.
You’ll be working consistently with young swimmers as they develop the technical skills, training habits and confidence needed to progress through the competitive swimming pathway.
The role could suit an emerging swim coach looking for regular paid coaching work, or a university student studying sport, exercise science, physical education, coaching or a related field who would like to combine their studies with meaningful practical coaching experience.
You’ll work approximately 5.45–8.00pm, Monday to Friday, including preparation and setup before the coaching session.
You’ll work primarily with HPK’s development-level swimmers as they progress through the competitive swimming pathway.
This isn’t a role where you’ll spend most of your time observing from the sidelines.
We want you coaching.
You’ll work directly with swimmers, teaching technique, correcting skills, developing good training habits and helping young athletes make the transition from learning to swim well to learning to train well.
You’ll also work alongside experienced HPK coaches, giving you the opportunity to develop your own coaching skills while contributing meaningfully to the programme.
First and foremost, you need to be able to coach swimming.
We’re looking for someone who:
Previous coaching experience would be valuable, but we’re equally interested in someone with a strong swimming background, good technical knowledge and genuine coaching potential.
We’d particularly like to hear from university students studying sport and exercise science, physical education, coaching or related disciplines.
There may be an opportunity for these coaching hours to contribute towards an internship, practicum or work-placement requirement, and we’re happy to work with the successful applicant and their university around mentoring, practical hours and development requirements.
Our preference is that this is a paid coaching position. However, we recognise that some university programmes have specific requirements around unpaid internships or placements, and we’re open to structuring the role accordingly where required.
HPK has a long-established competitive swimming programme, while Swimgym provides a pathway introducing and developing swimmers from their earliest experiences in the water.
Together, that gives an emerging coach the opportunity to see how swimmers progress from learning fundamental skills through to competitive swimming and higher-performance environments.
And most importantly, you’ll coach - a lot.
Five evenings every week, working directly with young athletes alongside experienced coaches, is a pretty good way to become a better swimming coach.
If swimming has been part of your life and coaching might be part of your future, we’d love to hear from you.
Tell us a little about yourself, your swimming and coaching background, what you’re currently studying or doing, and why the opportunity interests you.
The position is employed through Swimgym, with coaching delivered within the HPK Swim Club programme.
Swim Well. Swim Fast. Swim Safe.
