National Projects Lead - Government Facilities

Job summary

Downer is seeking a National Team Leader – Projects to lead a national portfolio of government facility projects in New Zealand. You will partner with the National Programme Manager to drive programme performance, manage budgets and risks, and deliver high‑quality outcomes on time and within scope.

You will build capability across the project management team, maintain strong stakeholder relationships, and ensure compliance with safety, quality and governance standards.

Qualifications

• Adesired tertiary qualification in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or Mechanical, Electrical or Civil Engineering.
• Adesired formal qualification in Project Management (Diploma or equivalent experience)
• Significant experience working within a Project Management consultancy or Tier 1 construction/engineering contractor
• Strong commercial and analytical capability, with advanced computer literacy and demonstrated experience using MS Project
• Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence, engage and produce clear, concise written documentation for senior stakeholders
• Proven ability to plan, prioritise and report effectively across complex, multi‑project environments

Responsibilities

• Lead and support national project teams to plan, execute and deliver programmes of work in line with customer, contractual and business requirements
• Partner closely with the National Programme Manager to manage programme performance, including budgets, forecasts, reporting and risk mitigation
• Monitor project progress against milestones, ensuring delivery is on time, within budget and aligned to quality‑assured programme methodologies
• Build capability across the Project Management team through coaching, training, workshops and performance support to drive consistency and accountability
• Develop and maintain accurate, high‑quality reporting, documentation and presentations for customers and key stakeholders
• Foster strong, collaborative relationships with customers, internal stakeholders and cross‑functional teams to achieve positive commercial and service outcomes
• Ensure compliance with Zero Harm, safety, quality, commercial and governance requirements, proactively managing risks and non-conformance
• Drive a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance processes, systems, tools and ways of working across the national programme
