Job summary

SGS is seeking an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join the Taupō team. This role involves maintenance, repair, overhaul, and installation of geothermal pipeline systems and steamfield equipment across workshop and site environments.

You will read technical drawings, diagnose faults, and support outage work while ensuring HSEQ compliance and high-quality workmanship.

Qualifications

  • Trade certificate or equivalent recognised in mechanical engineering.
  • Proven hands-on experience in assembly, maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specs.
  • Strong fault-finding, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Commitment to health, safety, environment and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance, repairs, overhauls, and installations on geothermal systems.
  • Carry out planned and emergency outage work to minimise downtime.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and implement repair solutions.
  • Safely use hand/tools and fitting equipment to spec.
  • Read drawings and follow engineering documentation precisely.
  • Document maintenance activities and materials used; ensure traceability.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and project teams to deliver outcomes.

As our geothermal and industrial projects continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join our Taupō team.

We're looking for a practical, hands-on professional who enjoys solving mechanical challenges, takes pride in quality workmanship, and is committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety.

As a Mechanical Fitter, you will play a key role in the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and installation of geothermal pipeline systems, valves, steamfield equipment, and associated infrastructure. Working across workshop and site environments, you will contribute to both planned maintenance activities and critical outage projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance, repairs, overhauls, and installations on geothermal pipeline systems, valves, and steamfield equipment.
  • Carry out planned and emergency outage work while minimising operational downtime.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and implement effective repair solutions.
  • Safely and efficiently utilise hand tools, power tools, and specialist fitting equipment.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, engineering specifications, and work instructions.
  • Conduct quality inspections and measurements to ensure work meets required standards and tolerances.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, project teams, and geothermal operations personnel to deliver successful project outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, materials used, and outage work completed.
  • Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) requirements.
  • Actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and operational excellence.
Qualifications
  • Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter or within a similar engineering, maintenance, or industrial fitting role.
  • Strong practical skills in mechanical assembly, disassembly, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Proficiency using hand tools, power tools, and fitting equipment.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret technical drawings and engineering documentation.
  • Strong fault-finding, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Full New Zealand Driver Licence.
  • Previous experience working within geothermal operations or steamfield environments.
  • A Class 2 and Class 4 New Zealand driverslicence
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Experience with precision measuring tools and gauges.
  • Additional certifications or specialist training in mechanical fitting or engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing training, professional development, and career growth.
