Job summary

SGS is seeking a motivated Mechanical Apprentice to join SGS Gidlow in Taupo, NZ, gaining hands-on experience on geothermal and industrial equipment.

Earn while you learn, work with experienced tradespeople, and complete a nationally recognised trade qualification. Applicants should have a mechanical mindset, a strong work ethic and a commitment to safety.

Full NZ driver's license preferred; structured on‑the‑job training and career development opportunities available.

Qualifications

  • Interest in mechanical trades and hands-on work.
  • Previous experience in a practical role.
  • Completion of a mechanical/engineering/trade pre-trade course highly regarded.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
  • Positive attitude, reliability and strong work ethic.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Full New Zealand driver’s licence.
  • Commitment to working safely and following procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the maintenance, repair and installation of geothermal pipelines, valves and steamfield equipment.
  • Learn practical fitting and mechanical skills while working alongside experienced tradespeople.
  • Support planned maintenance and outage activities to help keep operations running smoothly.
  • Use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Learn to read technical drawings, specifications and work instructions.
  • Carry out inspections and quality checks under supervision.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed work and training activities.
  • Follow all health, safety and environmental requirements.
  • Actively participate in apprenticeship training and work towards achieving your trade qualification.
  • Contribute to a positive team culture and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Previous experience in a practical role
