Cactus Outdoor | Christchurch City | Full Time
Cactus Outdoor | Christchurch City | Full Time
Cactus Outdoor has been making some of New Zealand's toughest outdoor and workwear gear since 1992. As we grow, we're looking for a Marketing Manager to lead the strategy and execution of everything that shapes how customers experience the Cactus brand: content, campaigns, digital, and the team behind it.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You won't own the revenue number directly, but you'll own the quality and consistency of everything that touches the customer journey, and you'll be measured on the results that flow from great marketing - engagement, campaign performance, and brand consistency across every channel. You'll lead a small team, starting with our Digital Media Co-Ordinator, and you'll work closely with Sales, Supply, and our Managing Director to make sure marketing is pulling in the same direction as the wider business.
This role replaces the incumbent who is leaving to pursue his photography career.
Execute the marketing strategy, set the content calendar, and campaign roadmap in line with commercial and retail priorities
Plan and lead promotional campaigns, collaborations, and product launches end-to-end, coordinating across Sales, Retail, and Supply
Own final sign-off on brand consistency, tone, and visual identity across every channel
Take complete ownership of our NZ and AU Shopify sites - themes, layout, content, product setup, and merchandising
Handle site logistics and ongoing updates, including some hands-on coding (theme/Liquid, HTML/CSS)
Run our storefronts as the primary sales channel - hands-on Shopify experience is essential
Plan and optimise paid media across Google and Meta
Own SEO and content marketing, including how discovery is shifting toward AI/LLM search
Build and manage email flows
Deep understanding of the analytics stack - GA4, Google Ads, Google Merchant Centre, and Google Business Profile
Manage, coach, and develop the marketing team, setting clear KPIs and reviewing performance regularly
Ensure everything the team produces - content, campaigns, UGC, and ambassador activity - meets brand, quality, and commercial standards
Lead B2B marketing, including POS and shop-in-shop
Partner with Store Managers on in-store promotional execution
Assist with the creation and management of in-store and tradeshow events
Produce marketing assets using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop especially), plus Canva for quicker turnarounds
Manage the marketing budget, including content production, paid media, and ambassador/UGC spend
Own marketing performance reporting to the Head of Sales, covering team KPIs, campaign results, and channel performance
Represent marketing in commercial planning, so campaigns align with stock, promotions, and store priorities
You'll need:
Proven experience leading or managing a marketing function or team, ideally in a retail or consumer brand environment
A solid grounding in product marketing and sales, paired with genuine brand expertise - you connect commercial priorities to a coherent brand story rather than treating the two as separate jobs
Strong, hands-on Shopify experience, with enough comfort in theme/Liquid and HTML/CSS to make ongoing site updates yourself
A working understanding of how paid media (Google/Meta) is planned and optimised
Confidence using GA4, Google Ads, Google Merchant Centre, and Google Business Profile as part of your everyday toolkit
Adobe Creative Suite skills (Photoshop especially), plus Canva for faster turnarounds
Experience building or managing UGC and ambassador/affiliate programs
Strong written and oral communication skills, and the analytical ability to turn marketing data into decisions
The organisational skills to manage people and priorities under tight deadlines, with a genuinely accurate, detail-oriented approach to reporting and analysis
A willingness to be hands-on at events and trade shows - including running tills and putting up signage when needed
It'll help if you also have:
A track record of coaching direct reports and holding a team accountable to targets
An understanding of how SEO and content discovery is shifting toward AI/LLM search
A high level of computer literacy and comfort across the tools of modern marketing
The resilience to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-priority retail environment
We're based in the Christchurch CBD. We keep things flexible, back good people to do good work, and we're growing - we want people who want to grow with us.
Cactus Outdoor makes hard-wearing clothing and gear for people who spend their lives outdoors or on the job — built to New Zealand conditions, designed and manufactured right here in Christchurch. We've been at it since 1992, and while we've got the pedigree of a company more than thirty years old, we're still run by people who use the gear themselves. If you want to help tell that story to more people, we'd love to hear from you.
