Job summary

NMIT – Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology in Nelson seeks a Marine Engineer Tutor to deliver the Maritime Engineering programme. Based on our sunny campus, you will teach, assess, and help students apply practical engineering knowledge.

The role includes updating teaching resources, creating assessments, and processing results, with support to develop adult teaching qualifications. Applicants should hold MEC3 certification, plus experience as Chief Engineer, and strong communication

Qualifications

• MEC3 qualification is essential for the role.
• Experience as Chief Engineer in a marine environment is preferred.
• Good presentation and communication skills are desirable; support for adult teaching qualification will be provided.

The International Maritime Institute of New Zealand is part of Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. We offer a wide range of maritime based courses to the local fishing industry and commercial operators around NZ and the world. We are currently undertaking recruitment for our 2026 academic year and seeking a full time (1.0 FTE) Tutor based in sunny Nelson to teach on our Maritime Engineering programme. We invest in modern training equipment, including a virtual bridge navigation simulator, lifeboat, Kongsberg full mission marine engineering simulator, fast rescue boat, speed boats and New Zealand's only three-storey fire training facility. We are currently looking for a Marine Engineer to join our teaching team.

The key responsibilities for the role are:

• Engaging with students in a learning environment,
• Review and update resources and classroom materials,
• Create and mark assessments, and
• Process student results

To be successful in this role you will need:

• Marine Engineer Class 3 (MEC3) qualification which is essential to the role,
• experience working as a Chief Engineer in a marine engineering environment,
• proven understanding of systems, maintenance schedules and regulatory requirements,
• experience in presentation and communication skills preferred; however full support to obtain adult teaching qualification will be provided,
• an acceptable level of computer literacy,
• experience working as an engineer at sea and/or onshore with fishing/smaller vessels.
