Qualifications

• At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in marine transport, ship operations, cargo operations, vessel loading/stowage or a closely related maritime role.
• New Zealand occupational registration, certification, licence or Maritime New Zealand recognition required by law to perform the duties of the position.
• Experience in vessel cargo planning, loading and stowage operations.
• Solid knowledge of vessel stability, trim, ballast and safe cargo-loading principles.
• Experience in conducting or interpreting draft surveys and cargo calculations.
• Ability to interpret and prepare vessel loading and stowage plans.
• Understanding of maritime safety and shipboard operational requirements.
• Strong communication skills and ability to liaise with vessel personnel and shore-based stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently and exercise sound professional judgement in a safety-critical maritime environment.
• A valid driver's licence and ability to undertake work-related travel.

Responsibilities

• Prepare stowage plans to maximise cargo uplift and consider cargo grade and dimensions.
• Liaise with vessel masters, owners, stevedores, agents and port authorities.
• Conduct draft surveys and monitor loading progress.
• Monitor cargo stowage in holds and on deck to maximise uplift.
• Check vessel stability, trim and ballast; ensure safe loading.
• Communicate cargo volumes and requirements to relevant parties.
• Manage loading operations and address delays, crew strength, and cargo availability.
• Inspect and report vessel damage identified during cargo operations.
• Prepare final cargo and stowage plans and Departure Condition Reports.

Aquarius Shipping Consultants Limited is seeking an experienced Marine Surveyor / Cargo Superintendent to join our team.

This is a professional maritime role involving cargo planning, vessel loading and stowage operations, draft surveys, vessel stability monitoring and coordination with vessels and shore-based stakeholders.

The primary purpose of the role is to support the safe and efficient turnaround of vessels, maximise cargo uplift and ensure that vessel stability remains within required parameters.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include:

• Preparing stowage plans to maximise vessel cargo uplift, taking into account cargo grade, type, length and other relevant loading factors;
• Liaising with vessel masters and officers, principals, vessel owners, stevedores, marshallers, agents, port authorities, fumigators and other stakeholders;
• Conducting draft surveys at appropriate intervals to determine cargo weight and monitor loading progress;
• Monitoring cargo stowage in vessel holds and on deck to maximise cargo uplift and minimise unnecessary ballast;
• Monitoring vessel trim and ensuring the vessel remains upright and appropriately trimmed;
• Frequently checking vessel stability to ensure it remains within allowable parameters;
• Communicating with relevant parties regarding cargo volumes, loading progress and operational requirements;
• Monitoring loading operations and assisting with the efficient management of operational delays, gang strength and cargo availability;
• Inspecting and reporting any vessel damage identified during cargo operations;
• Preparing final cargo and stowage plans following completion of loading; and
• Preparing Departure Condition Reports following vessel departure.

To be considered for this position, you must have:

• At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in marine transport, ship operations, cargo operations, vessel loading/stowage or a closely related maritime role;

Location and Travel

• The position is principally based at 19 Aranui Drive, Papamoa Beach, Papamoa 3118, Bay of Plenty.
• Due to the operational nature of the position, the employee will be required to travel to ports and vessel locations within New Zealand from time to time, according to vessel schedules, client requirements and operational assignments.
• The employee must be willing and able to travel outside the Bay of Plenty for work, which may include overnight stays.
• Occasional work-related travel to Australia may also be required.
• Travel to ports and vessel locations is an inherent requirement of the position.

Hours and Remuneration

• Permanent, full-time position
• $80,000 gross per annum
• Additional hours may be required depending on vessel schedules and operational requirements
• Overtime will be paid in accordance with the employment agreement
• The salary and guaranteed hours correspond with the proposed employment agreement.

• You will be an experienced maritime professional with a strong understanding of cargo operations, vessel stability and safe loading practices.
• You will be comfortable working independently, exercising professional judgement and coordinating with vessel personnel, ship owners, principals, stevedores, marshallers, agents, port authorities and other stakeholders.
• As vessel movements and loading schedules can vary, you must also be flexible regarding working hours and work-related travel.
