Job summary

Hillmorton High School in Christchurch is seeking a mainstream Learning Assistant on a fixed-term basis to cover leave. You will support ākonga with literacy and numeracy across the timetable under teacher supervision, occasionally working independently.

The role is 27.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am–3:00 pm. Police vetting is required before appointment, and applicants must be eligible to work in New Zealand. Salary aligns with the NZEI Support Staff agreement.

Qualifications

• Learning Assistant/Teaching Assistant experience preferred.
• Experience working with young people is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Working with a number of neurodivergent ākonga across the timetable under adult supervision, but sometimes independently.
• Build trusting relationships with ākonga.
• Assist ākonga to stay on task and build self-management and independence.
• Record information about ākonga and their work for kaiako, SENCO, and line manager.
• Contribute to the Student Support team through clear communication and collaboration.
• Maintain confidentiality for staff, ākonga and whānau.
• Attend meetings when necessary.

Hillmorton High School is a diverse urban coeducational school situated in the South-West of Christchurch. The school is a fast growing Y7–13 school with dedicated middle and senior schools. We have a roll of over 1400 and with further building works underway, the roll is expected to increase in the next few years. We are seeking a mainstream Learning Assistant, Fixed-term to cover leave:

This role supports students in mainstream schooling. The successful candidate will have strong literacy and numeracy skills and the ability to support the progress, engagement, and achievement of ākonga at Te Kura Tuarua o Horomaka. In this role you will assist the classroom teacher by supporting students to access their learning.

This position is for a fixed-term position to cover leave. Start date to be negotiated once a successful police vet has been received. This position ends on 11th December 2026.

The hours of work are 27.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday 9.00 am-3:00pm.

Qualifications and Experience

The Learning Assistant will:

• be working with a number of neurodivergent ākonga across the timetable under adult supervision, but sometimes independently
• build trusting relationships with ākonga
• assist ākonga to stay on task and build self-management strategies and increased independence
• record information about ākonga and their work as required by kaiako, SENCO, and your line manager.
• contribute to the Student Support team through clear communication and building positive relationships with colleagues.
• preserve confidentiality for staff, ākonga and their whānau
• attend meetings when necessary

Salary as per the Support Staff Collective agreement NZEI, depending on qualifications & experience
