Job summary

AWF Limited in Timaru is seeking an experienced Leading Hand or Asphalt Operator to take a hands-on leadership role on civil construction sites.

You will work with the Foreman, coordinate daily activities, supervise crews, and ensure safe, high-quality asphalt work. Applicants must have current Class 2 licence and be prepared for site-based work in Canterbury.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in asphalt operations.
• Leadership qualities with the ability to direct crews.
• Current Class 2 Licence minimum.
• WTR endorsements highly regarded.
• Sound understanding of site safety, traffic management and civil construction practices.

Responsibilities

• Support the Foreman with daily planning and coordination of site activities.
• Lead and motivate crew members to deliver quality work safely and efficiently.
• Carry out hands-on asphalt laying, plant operation, labouring, and site set-up duties.
• Complete pre-start checks, equipment inspections, and risk assessments.
• Mentor and support team members on-site.
• Champion a strong health and safety culture across all projects.
• Ensure work is completed to a high standard and on schedule.

About the Role

As the Leading Hand, you'll work closely alongside the Foreman in a 2IC capacity, helping coordinate daily operations while remaining hands-on in the field. This is a leadership role for someone who isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves and lead from the front.
