Job summary

New Zealand Defence Force – Waiouru, North Island is seeking a Kaiārahi / Visitor Host to deliver engaging tours and connect visitors with New Zealand Army history. You will support education programmes, school visits, and public events, while delivering exceptional customer service and contributing to museum safety and presentation.

The role is full-time, five days in a seven-day roster with some weekend work.

New Zealand Defence Force – Waiouru, North Island

The National Army Museum connects people with the stories, service and history of New Zealand's Army, preserving and sharing this important heritage for future generations.

As a Kaiārahi / Visitor Host, you'll be part of a passionate team dedicated to delivering an exceptional experience for every visitor. This is a varied and rewarding role that combines public engagement, education, customer service, and museum support activities within a unique cultural and heritage environment.

Working with visitors from across New Zealand and around the world, you'll help create meaningful experiences that inspire people to connect with New Zealand Army history.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Deliver engaging guided tours and share New Zealand Army stories
  • Support education programmes, school visits, and public events
  • Create memorable visitor experiences through exceptional customer service
  • Contribute to the safety, security, and presentation of the Museum

In this full-time role you will be working for five days within a seven day roster. Some weekend work is required.

The salary for this role ranges from $62,075-$68,852, inclusive of a 4% superannuation contribution. Appointments within this range are based on skills and experience.

You will also have:

  • A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in a customer-facing, cultural heritage, tourism, or visitor services environment (desirable)
  • Confidence using technology and learning new systems
  • A genuine interest and a willingness to learn about New Zealand’s military history
  • An appreciation of te ao Māori, with knowledge of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori, or a willingness to learn

To be eligible for the required level of government security clearance with the NZ Defence Force, you need to meet certain citizenship and residency criteria. Here’s what you need to know:

Low Level Security Clearance

You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.

At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last five (5) years.

You must have a five (5) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
