Job summary

Hawthorn Geddes Engineers & Architects Ltd in Whangarei invites an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing team. You will undertake field investigations, perform geotechnical analysis, and contribute to design and reporting across diverse projects in Northland.

The role requires a BE(Hons) in Civil Engineering, a minimum of 3 years of geotechnical experience, and strong skills in 3D modelling, slope-stability analysis, and geotechnical software.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with Honours in Civil Engineering (BE(Hons) or equivalent).
• Minimum of 3 years of geotechnical engineering experience including site investigation, analysis and design.
• Demonstrated skills in 3D modelling to support geotechnical analysis and design.
• Strong understanding of slope-stability analysis and design.
• Experience with geotechnical software (gINT, PLAXIS, GeoStudio, etc.).
• Excellent communication skills and ability to liaise with clients.

Responsibilities

• Undertake site investigations and geotechnical assessments, including fieldwork, laboratory testing and data analysis.
• Provide geotechnical design recommendations for foundations, retaining structures, and earthworks.
• Prepare geotechnical reports and technical documentation in line with industry standards.
• Collaborate with Hawthorn Geddes multidisciplinary team including civil and structural engineers, architects and building team.
• Mentor junior engineers with guidance and technical support.
• Liaise with clients, contractors and regulatory authorities to ensure project delivery.
• Support project management tasks including cost estimation, scheduling and risk management.

We are seeking a talented Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing team in Whangarei. If you are passionate about geotechnical engineering and ready to work on exciting and diverse projects in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful regions, we want to hear from you!

This is a full-time, permanent role working 40 hours per week. The salary range for this role is $85,000 - $95,000 per annum.

Key responsibilities

Undertake site investigations and geotechnical assessments, including fieldwork, laboratory testing and data analysis.

Provide geotechnical design recommendations for foundations, retaining structures, and earthworks.

Prepare geotechnical reports and technical documentation, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.

Collaborate with the wider Hawthorn Geddes multidisciplinary team including civil and structural engineers as well as the architect and the building team.

Assistance in mentoring junior engineers providing guidance and technical support.

Liaise with clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities to ensure successful project delivery.

Support project management tasks, including cost estimation, scheduling, and risk management.

About you

A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, including site investigation, analysis, and design.

Demonstrated skills in 3D modelling, with the ability to develop and interpret 3D ground and design models to support geotechnical analysis and design.

Strong understanding of slope-stability analysis and design.

Experience with geotechnical software (e.g., gINT, PLAXIS, GeoStudio, etc.).

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team and liaise with clients.
