Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

Most intermediate accountant roles offer you more of the same work you're doing now, with a slightly better title. This one is different, and here's the honest version of why.

We're rebuilding how compliance work gets done at PKF Doyles. AI and automation are doing more of the mechanical parts of year-end and reporting every month, and that changes what an accountant's day looks like. Less time chasing a trial balance into line. More time actually talking to the client about their business. We're not fully there yet, and we won't pretend otherwise — but we're moving, and we'd rather have someone alongside us who finds that interesting than someone who'd prefer we left things alone.

What you'd be doing

Real client work from the start: financial statements, tax and GST returns, livestock reconciliations, management reporting. Whanganui clients are farmers, business owners, trades and large operators — people who want a straight answer, not a lecture. You'll deal with them directly, and they'll know your name.

Alongside that, you'll be using the automation we've built and helping us work out what to build next. You'll find the bits that don't work. You'll find the jobs where the old way is still better.

What we'll teach you

This is an intermediate role and we're going to train you properly, because that's how you get good people in our town. That means:

Time with senior staff on real files, not a training module you click through on your own

Being shown how to use these tools well — and how to spot when a tool has confidently produced nonsense, which matters more than any of it

Support towards CA if you're working through it, including study leave

A genuine path into advisory work and client management, at the pace you're ready for

What you'd need

A couple of years in public practice, enough that you can take a set of accounts most of the way without someone standing over you. Good working knowledge of Xero and Figured if you have it. Good judgement, and common sense.

Curiosity about the technology matters more than experience with it. If you've never touched an AI tool but you're interested, that's fine. If you've been quietly automating your own workarounds in Excel for years, we'd like to meet you.

Why here

Whanganui, a small enough office that your work is visible, and a client base that's been with the firm for years. Ongoing mentoring, decent people, and a reasonable view on hours.

And this: the profession is going to be reshaped by this technology over the next few years, and most accountants your level will experience that as something happening to them. You'd be one of the people doing it. That's worth something, wherever your career goes next.
