Job summary

Awanui Labs Dunedin, part of the Awanui Group, is seeking a Head of Department for Haematology in Dunedin. This senior role combines technical leadership with people management and commercial accountability, reporting to the Laboratory Manager.

You will lead operational and clinical performance, drive quality systems, and optimise resources to deliver timely, accurate diagnostics across hospital and community settings.

Qualifications

• Registration as Medical Laboratory Scientist with Haematology specialization and APC.
• Minimum five years’ Haematology experience in diagnostic lab settings.
• Proven experience leading and developing a technical or laboratory team.
• Strong budgeting, KPI, and workforce management skills.
• Proficiency with LIS and Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

• Provide strong technical and operational leadership for the Haematology department.
• Accountable for technical, operational, people and financial performance.
• Lead a skilled laboratory team and ensure high-quality diagnostic services.
• Apply workforce planning, productivity improvements and resource optimisation.
• Lead change initiatives to improve workflows and service delivery.
