Are you a commercially minded finance leader who enjoys getting into the detail, improving processes, and turning financial information into meaningful business decisions? If you’re analytical, proactive, and confident taking ownership, we’d love to hear from you.
We’re looking for an experienced Group Financial Controller to lead our Finance function across New Zealand and Australia, based in Wellington or Auckland. Reporting to the CEO, you’ll play a key role in strengthening financial reporting, improving forecasting and cash flow management, and driving greater visibility of business performance and profitability.
You’ll oversee the financial operations of both markets, leading financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and internal controls. Working closely with the leadership team and department managers, you’ll provide clear financial insights to support decision‑making, improve cost management, and help achieve our revenue, gross profit, and EBITDA targets.
A key focus of this role will be improving project costing, work in progress (WIP), inventory management, and bill of materials (BOM) processes, ensuring we have accurate, timely information on project margins and business performance. You’ll also lead improvements to our finance systems and processes, including bringing selected outsourced activities in‑house and building a more efficient, capable Finance team.
This is a hands‑on leadership role in a growing Australasian business where you’ll have the opportunity to make a real impact, challenge existing ways of working, and help shape the future of our finance function.
Lead financial reporting across our Australian and New Zealand entities, including monthly management accounts, profit and loss, balance sheets, cash flow reporting, and financial performance analysis.
Own the month‑end close process, working towards completion within five working days and ensuring accurate, timely reporting.
Lead annual budgeting, quarterly reforecasting, and rolling 12‑month cash flow and project margin forecasts.
Provide meaningful financial analysis, identifying variances, risks, margin erosion, and opportunities to improve profitability.
Review and strengthen job costing, WIP, inventory, and BOM processes to improve project‑level gross profit visibility and cost control.
Partner with department managers to improve financial accountability, cost forecasting, purchasing decisions, and overall business performance.
Lead monthly project financial reviews with the leadership team and prepare financial reporting and insights for Board meetings.
Review and document end‑to‑end finance processes, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, controls, and reporting.
Develop and implement a plan to bring selected outsourced finance activities in‑house, including building internal capability and resources as required.
Drive improvements in finance systems, automation, and reporting, including our ERP and supporting platforms such as Xero, HubSpot, and Power BI.
Maintain strong cash flow and working capital management, including effective debtor and creditor processes.
Oversee payroll, bank and credit card reconciliations, taxation, statutory reporting, external audits, insurance, and foreign exchange management.
Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, tax requirements, and regulatory obligations across New Zealand and Australia.
Lead, coach, and develop the Finance team, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Support our Growth by Sharing programme through regular company‑wide forecasting, transparent financial reporting, and bonus tracking.
Work closely with the General Manager and wider leadership team to translate financial information into practical recommendations and actions.
We’re looking for an experienced finance professional who combines strong technical accounting knowledge with commercial thinking, sound judgement, and a hands‑on approach.
You’ll be someone who:
Has proven experience in a Financial Controller, Group Financial Controller, or similar senior finance leadership role.
Holds a relevant accounting qualification, such as CA or CPA, or has equivalent professional experience.
Has strong experience in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and management accounting.
Understands job costing, WIP, BOM, inventory control, and gross profit analysis.
Has experience improving financial processes, implementing controls, and driving operational efficiencies.
Is confident working across multiple entities and managing financial reporting and compliance requirements.
Has strong analytical skills and can identify trends, challenge assumptions, and turn numbers into actionable insights.
Is commercially astute and comfortable partnering with non‑finance managers to improve business performance.
Has experience leading, coaching, and developing a Finance team.
Is confident with financial systems, ERP platforms, and reporting tools, with an interest in automation and process improvement.
Has excellent communication skills and can present financial information clearly to senior leaders and operational teams.
Is proactive, adaptable, and comfortable balancing strategic priorities with hands‑on financial management.
Takes ownership, follows through on commitments, and looks for better ways of doing things.
Experience in manufacturing, commercial furniture, construction, or another project‑based business would be highly regarded, particularly where inventory, project costing, and margin management are important.
