Job summary

GHD in Wellington is seeking a Graduate Fire/Mechanical Engineer to join the Building Engineering & Structures team, commencing February 2027 as part of our two-year Graduate Development Program. You will work alongside experienced engineers to design and document fire protection systems for hospitals, schools and public facilities.

Our Building Engineering & Structures team is looking for a Graduate Fire/Mechanical Engineer to join GHD’s Graduate cohort in Wellington, commencing in February 2027.

As a Graduate Fire (Mechanical) Engineer, you will:

• Support the design and documentation of fire protection systems, including fire sprinkler, hydrant and hose reel systems, fire water supplies and related mechanical services
• Assist with calculations, equipment selection, layouts, specifications and technical reports
• Contribute to site investigations and assessments, testing and commissioning activities
• Help deliver safe, resilient and practical building services solutions for settings such as hospitals and healthcare facilities, schools, public buildings and transport infrastructure
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, structural and architectural specialists, as well as clients and contractors, while developing your technical judgement, project management and consulting skills

What we’re looking for

You’ll be a great fit if you:

• Have graduated, or will complete your studies by the end of 2026, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering
• Have a genuine interest in fire protection, building services and designing safe, resilient places for people and communities
• Bring strong communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills, together with attention to detail and a proactive approach
• Are based in, or willing to relocate to, Wellington and ready to start with our Graduate Program cohort in February 2027
