Job summary

GHD in Wellington is seeking a Graduate Fire/Mechanical Engineer to join our Building Engineering & Structures team, commencing in February 2027. You will work across fire protection systems design and building services, supporting multi-disciplinary projects for healthcare, education and transport sectors.

This two-year Graduate Development Program supports your transition into consulting with mentors, peers and client exposure, helping you build technical capability and consulting skills

Qualifications

• Graduated or will complete studies by end of 2026 with a Mechanical Engineering degree.
• Genuine interest in fire protection, building services and designing safe, resilient places for people and communities.
• Strong communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills, together with attention to detail and a proactive approach.
• Based in Wellington, or willing to relocate, and ready to start with the Graduate Program cohort in February 2027.

Responsibilities

• Support the design and documentation of fire protection systems, including fire sprinkler, hydrant and hose reel systems, fire water supplies and related mechanical services.
• Assist with calculations, equipment selection, layouts, specifications and technical reports.
• Contribute to site investigations and assessments, testing and commissioning activities.
• Help deliver safe, resilient and practical building services solutions for hospitals, schools, public buildings and transport infrastructure.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, structural and architectural specialists, as well as clients and contractors, while developing technical judgement, project management and consulting skills.
