Job summary

Omexom New Zealand in Upper Hutt is seeking a detail-oriented GIS Technician to maintain the accuracy and integrity of our network asset information within GIS.

You will capture, verify and update spatial data, work with field teams and project managers, and support CAD/GIS tools like Smallworld, AutoCAD and MicroStation. A focus on QA, health and safety, and continuous improvement is essential.

Qualifications

• A qualification in Geography, Geospatial Science, Surveying, Drafting, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Relevant GIS certifications or industry training would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Maintain accuracy and integrity of GIS network asset information.
• Capture, verify and update spatial data to support infrastructure management.
• Support GIS community in use and functionality of GIS applications.
• Capture landbase and network assets using GPS data collection.
• Update job status in SAP and perform data enhancement within GIS.
• Verify data with QA techniques and ensure health and safety compliance.
• Train and mentor others; work independently and with a team.

About the Role

We are looking for detail-orientated and proactive GIS Technician to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining the accuracy and integrity of network asset information within our Geographic Information System (GIS).

You will work closely with field teams, project managers, and other stakeholders, You will capture, verify, and update spatial data that supports the effective management and operation of critical infrastructure assets assets. Other responsibilities include:

• Supporting the GIS community in the use and functionally of the GIS application.
• Capturing landbase and network assets using GPS data collection and processing
• Using SAP to update job status
• Undertakingdata enhancement activities within the GIS, troubleshoot and support help desk on data issues.
• Verifying all data in GIS, including data captured by other GIS staff, using quality assurance techniques.
• Understand and comply with your obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and all associated regulations, standards, and approved codes of practice.
• Understand and comply with all Omexom health and safety policies and procedures.
• Take reasonable care of your own health and safety and reasonable care that your acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of other persons.
• Comply with any reasonable instruction given to you by Omexom relating to health and safety.

Qualifications and Skills

Qualifications

• A qualification in Geography, Geospatial Science, Surveying, Drafting, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Relevant GIS certifications or industry training would be advantageous.

Skills & Experience

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

• A minimum of 3 years' experience working with GIS data in a GIS Updater, GIS Technician, or similar role.
• Strong understanding of spatial databases, GIS data structures, and data capture standards.
• Experience using GIS applications, particularly GIS Smallworld, and familiarity with AutoCAD and MicroStation (CAD DXF).
• Knowledge of GPS data collection, processing, and asset mapping principles.
• Understanding of electricity network assets and distribution systems.
• Strong quality assurance and data auditing capabilities, with exceptional attention to detail.
• Experience working with cadastral landbase data and network asset information.
• The ability to interpret, troubleshoot, and resolve spatial data issues effectively.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to train and mentor others.
• A proactive approach to continuous improvement, problem-solving, and process optimisation.
• The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.
• A strong commitment to health, safety, and wellbeing in the workplace.
