Job summary

Omexom New Zealand is seeking a Design Estimator for our Substation Projects team in Auckland. You will develop accurate cost estimates, review technical designs, and collaborate with engineers, project managers, and clients to win competitive, compliant bids.

Key duties include preparing tender documents, coordinating with suppliers and subcontractors, and compiling comprehensive work packages with drawings, specs, and schedules. Health and safety compliance is essential in this role.

Qualifications

• Current NZEC Practising Licence or similar industry experience.
• Estimating/tendering skills, with an ability to be hands-on.
• Sound knowledge of the electrical industry with experience in commercial, industrial and high voltage installations.
• Experience in reading, understanding and reviewing single line drawings and control schematics.
• Knowledge of electrical regulations, industry requirements, contracting procedures and Contract Law.
• Knowledge on tendering: Fixed Price, Lump Sum, Schedule of Rates, Design and Build, GMP
• Knowledge on different types of specifications: Design and Build, Performance Specification, Standard Specification.
• Strong computer skills, particularly in Excel and spreadsheet-based cost estimating tools.
• Excellent communication, organisational, and stakeholder management skills.
• Strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines simultaneously

Responsibilities

• Preparing tender/quotations to customers with client schedules and supplementary information, submitting tender documents and negotiating contracts prior to award.
• Collating quotes from suppliers and subcontractors.
• Compiling detailed requirements for tender: labour rates, project management, supervision, plant and equipment, preliminary and general, margin, preparing tags and clarifications.
• Ensuring that projects are completed within agreed timeframes and within budgeted expenditure.
• Coordinating with customers, the company field staff, and sub-contractors to ensure project success.
• Compiling complete work packages, which include design notes, working drawings, specifications, material requirements, work instructions, resource requirements, work schedules, and all necessary approvals.
• Ensuring all documentation required by customers is completed, e.g. as-built drawings, asset records.
• Auditing works to ensure compliance with contract documents, design and construction standards, acts, regulations and network operating standards, industry standards, and safety requirements.
• Understand and comply with your obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and all associated regulations, standards, and approved codes of practice.
• Comply with any reasonable instruction given to you by the company relating to health and safety

About the Role

Are you a detail-oriented professional with a passion for turning complex designs into successful project outcomes? We’re looking for a motivated and analytical Design Estimator to join our Substation Projects team.
