GIS & Spatial Data Summer Internship - Parks

Are you studying GIS, geospatial science, surveying, geography, spatial planning, engineering, environmental science, or a related field? Do you enjoy working with maps, spatial data, and technology to solve real-world problems?

Christchurch City Council is seeking a motivated student or recent graduate to join our Parks Asset Management team for a summer internship focused on improving the quality and accuracy of our spatial asset information. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on GIS experience while contributing to projects that support the management of Christchurch's parks, green spaces, and infrastructure.

Council manages around 1,400 parks and relies on accurate spatial information to support planning, maintenance and asset management. In this role, you'll help improve GIS data by converting irrigation plans into mapped GIS assets, digitising currently unmapped green spaces, and reviewing existing park asset information to ensure it accurately reflects current conditions. Your work will help make Council's spatial data more complete, accessible and useful for operational and strategic decision-making.

This opportunity is ideal for a student or recent graduate studying GIS, Geospatial Science, Surveying, Geography, Spatial Planning, Environmental Science, Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related discipline. You'll have some experience using GIS software and an interest in spatial data, mapping, and problem solving. We're looking for someone who is detail-oriented, organised, and comfortable working through technical tasks accurately and consistently. Previous experience with our systems is not required, as training, mentoring, and support will be provided throughout the internship.

This internship will provide hands-on experience using ArcGIS and Council geospatial data within a large local government environment. You'll develop practical skills in georeferencing, digitising, spatial data management, quality assurance, and interpreting aerial imagery and engineering drawings. You'll work alongside experienced GIS, asset management, and irrigation specialists while contributing to projects that support the planning, maintenance, and management of Christchurch's parks and green spaces. The experience will also provide tangible examples of GIS work that can strengthen future job applications and interviews.

• Eligibility – Our internships are open to students currently enrolled with a New Zealand Tertiary Education Organisation, and students who have graduated within the last 12 months from a New Zealand Tertiary Education Organisation.
• Hours of work - This role will start on the 9th of November for a fixed term period of 3 months. We are looking for someone available 20 hours per week for the 3 month duration. We can be flexible for the right candidate.
• Location - This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street. This internship has a mix of office-based and field-based work.
• Pay-rate - Christchurch City Council Interns are paid the living wage - $29.90 per hour
