Graduate Geotechnical Engineer/Engineering Geologist

Location: Auckland
Permanent, Full-Time

Real people. Real problems. Smarter outcomes.

At HD Geo, we believe great technical work starts with trust — in our people, our thinking, and our relationships. We’re a geotechnical and contaminated-land consultancy known for clear advice, pragmatic solutions, and a culture where people are supported to do their best work without being micro-managed.

We’re looking for a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer or Engineering Geologist who is curious, practical, and keen to learn by doing. This is an opportunity to build strong foundations in consulting — supported by experienced engineers and engineering geologists, while being trusted early with real work and responsibility.

About the role

This is a hands‑on graduate role with exposure to both field and office work across a wide range of geotechnical projects. You’ll support investigations, assessments, reporting, and site observations — learning how good judgement is built, not just taught.

Requirements

Relevant tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology, Geoscience, or a related discipline.

Full NZ driver’s licence and the ability to travel to sites as required.

Legally able to work in New Zealand (NZ residency/citizenship, or a valid work visa).

Comfortable with a mix of field and office work, including early starts, variable weather, and practical, hands‑on tasks.

Strong written communication skills and attention to detail (you’ll be contributing to clear, client‑ready reporting).

Good numeracy and an analytical mindset for interpreting data, logs, drawings, and site observations.

A practical, safety‑first approach around drill rigs, excavations, construction sites, and field equipment.

Curiosity, initiative, and the willingness to ask questions, take feedback, and keep learning.

2 - 3 years internship/graduate experience in geotechnical consulting, contaminated land, earthworks, or construction supervision/logging.

Why HD Geo
  • High-trust environment — support without micromanagement
  • Strong coaching from experienced chartered professionals
  • Real responsibility early, with safety nets around you
  • Varied projects that help you learn fast and build judgement
  • Flexible work practices and a people-first culture
  • A close-knit, down-to-earth team that genuinely enjoys working together
  • Active Social Club and time to connect beyond project work

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
