Job summary

Gallagher in Hamilton, New Zealand, is offering a paid Summer Internship Programme from November 2026 to February 2027. You will work onsite for 10 weeks (400 hours) with mentors across engineering, cybersecurity, product teams and more, gaining practical skills and real-world project experience.

The Opportunity

Our paid Summer Internship Programme runs from November 2026 to February 2027 and gives you the opportunity to work onsite alongside engineers, developers, cybersecurity specialists, product teams, and technical experts on meaningful, real-world projects that support customers across New Zealand and global markets.

This is more than work experience. You’ll be trusted to contribute, solve real-world challenges, develop practical skills, and build connections across the business.

You’ll receive mentoring, gain exposure to industry-leading technology, and experience what it’s like to work in a global technology business. For students who are ready to grow with us, this internship can also be a pathway into Gallagher’s two-year Graduate Programme.

Internship Projects

We are looking for 10 students to take part in this year’s internship programme, with one student assigned to each of the following exciting projects:

  • Natural Language Workflow Editor: Investigate and prototype AI-powered workflow creation capabilities that enable users to build and modify automation workflows using natural language. Enhance workflow validation and explore locally hosted AI models to improve usability and scalability. Key Skills & Interests – Computer Science or Software Engineering student with an interest in artificial intelligence, large language models, software development, automation, prompt engineering, and user-focused design.

  • RFID & Antenna Optimisation Investigation: Research antenna placement constraints and technology coexistence within compact electronic devices, evaluating the performance of RFID, BLE, and related technologies under a range of operating conditions. Key Skills & Interests – Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Computer Engineering student with an interest in RF technologies, embedded systems, wireless communication, hardware experimentation, and data analysis.

  • Ephemeral UI: AI-Generated On-Demand Interfaces: Explore the use of AI-generated user interfaces that are dynamically created for specific security operations tasks, investigating their practicality, safety, and effectiveness within a real-world security platform. Key Skills & Interests – Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, or UX-focused student with an interest in AI, front-end development, user experience, product innovation, and emerging technologies.

  • Capacitive Touch Keypad Investigation: Research and prototype solutions that enable a glass capacitive touchscreen to provide a textured keypad experience while maintaining reliable operation in outdoor environments. Key Skills & Interests – Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electronic, or Product Design student with an interest in prototyping, user interaction design, product development, and testing.

  • Automated Fuzz Testing – Security & Reliability Testing: Research and evaluate automated fuzz testing approaches for web, mobile, and microservice applications to help identify security vulnerabilities and improve software reliability. Key Skills & Interests – Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Cybersecurity student with an interest in software testing, automation, application security, and CI/CD practices.

  • GPS Hardware & Algorithm Assessment for Animal Tracking: Investigate GPS hardware and positioning algorithms for on-animal tracking devices, evaluating the trade-offs between location accuracy, battery life, and overall system performance. Key Skills & Interests – Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering student with an interest in GNSS/GPS technologies, embedded systems, signal processing, data analysis, and hardware experimentation.

  • Hygroscopic Materials for Condensation Management: Research and evaluate enclosure materials that can help manage moisture and reduce condensation within outdoor electronic products, improving long-term reliability. Key Skills & Interests – Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Electronics student with an interest in materials science, environmental testing, product reliability, and experimental design.

  • Voice Interaction for Farm Equipment: Investigate voice control and spoken feedback technologies for agricultural products, assessing their effectiveness in noisy outdoor farm environments. Key Skills & Interests – Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, or Mechatronics student with an interest in speech recognition, embedded systems, audio processing, AI, and user experience.

  • Camera Vision Weighing for Livestock: Research and prototype computer vision approaches for estimating livestock weight using camera and 3D sensor data, evaluating different sensor technologies and machine learning models. Key Skills & Interests – Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Data Science, or Engineering student with an interest in computer vision, machine learning, AI, data analysis, and sensor technologies.

  • Autonomous Robotic Field Platform: Investigate and prototype an autonomous robotic platform capable of performing farm tasks such as livestock monitoring, pasture measurement, and infrastructure inspection. Key Skills & Interests – Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanical, Electronics, or Software Engineering student with an interest in robotics, autonomous systems, sensors, navigation, and prototyping.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the programme you must:

  • Be currently studying at a New Zealand tertiary institution, or have graduated within the past 12 months

  • Be completing or have completed an NZQA Level 6 qualification or higher in science, technology, engineering, or a related field

  • Be legally entitled to work in New Zealand during the internship period

  • Not have completed more than two previous Gallagher internships or held long-term or full-time employment with Gallagher outside of an internship
