Job summary

Hauraki District Council in Paeroa is seeking an experienced senior finance leader to own financial reporting, systems, controls and governance. You’ll lead a capable finance team and shape the way the Council reports, complies and improves its financial processes.

Qualifications

  • You’ll be a qualified accountant who has built solid experience across annual and statutory financial reporting, systems and accounting operations in large organisations, ideally local government or another complex public‑sector environment.
  • You will lead, coach and develop people within a public-sector finance function and contribute to policy and governance, risk management and procurement processes.
  • Strong knowledge of financial controls, asset accounting and financial reporting standards is essential.

Lead a finance team and take ownership of reporting, systems, controls and governance in this broad finance opportunity in Paeroa.

Hauraki District Council is looking for an experienced finance professional to take a key leadership role within its Finance & Risk team. In this role you will have genuine influence, lead a capable team and get to stay close to the numbers.

Reporting to the Head of Finance & Risk, you'll lead a team covering accounting, payroll, financial and asset accounting, while taking ownership of financial reporting, systems, controls and compliance.

The role

This is a broad role that will suit someone who enjoys more than simply producing the numbers.You'll be the person making sure the Council's financial systems, reporting and accounting processes are working as they should, and looking for ways to make them better.

You'll have responsibility for annual and statutory accounts, audit engagement, fixed assets and valuations, financial controls and policies, as well as providing sound financial advice across the organisation. You'll also be involved in procurement policy and risk management.

Just as importantly, you'll lead and develop the finance team, helping people grow while ensuring the organisation receives a consistently high level of service.

What we're looking for

You’ll be a qualified accountant who has built solid experience across annual and statutory financial reporting, systems and accounting operations, in large organisations ideally local government or another complex public‑sector environment.

You’ll bring:

  • CA membership with CA ANZ, or an equivalent professional qualification (or possibly working towards)
  • Around 5–6+ years' relevant accounting and financial management experience
  • Strong statutory and financial reporting experience
  • Good knowledge of financial systems, controls and fixed asset accounting
  • Proven experience leading, coaching and developing people
  • Strong analytical skills and sound judgement
  • An understanding of local government or another complex public‑sector environment would be valuable.

This isn't a narrow accounting role. You'll have exposure across people leadership, financial reporting, systems, audit, assets, compliance, policy and risk, with the opportunity to influence how the finance function operates and develops.
