Job summary

Otago Regional Council (ORC) is seeking a Field Surveyor & Design Engineer to join our Engineering team in Dunedin on a permanent, full-time basis. The role blends engineering design, project management and surveying to deliver infrastructure projects safely and efficiently.

This hybrid role combines surveying expertise with project coordination, planning and reporting to ensure projects stay within scope and budget, while maintaining high professional standards.

Qualifications

  • A degree level tertiary qualification in Engineering (Civil), surveying or similar experience
  • Experience assisting with project coordination, design, field work, or technical support activities.
  • Understanding of engineering surveying principles and field procedures, including data collection, data processing, and construction stake-out
  • Ability to operate survey equipment including GPS/GNSS and total stations, or willingness to learn
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work to deadlines

Responsibilities

  • Carrying out field surveying activities including topographical, cross sections, project set-out, as-built surveys, and general data collection
  • Processing survey data and preparing plans, drawings and reports
  • Assisting with determining and defining project scope and objectives and ensuring project deliverables are met

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Field Surveyor & Design Engineer to join our Engineering on a permanent, full time (37.5 hours per week) basis, in our busy Dunedin office.

The purpose of this position is to assist the Team Leader Assets and Delivery and Manager Engineering to deliver infrastructure projects. They will be responsible for delivering specific tasks within the project delivery team as well as managing projects with support and guidance.

This hybrid role combines engineering design, project management, and technical surveying expertise ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, within scope, and to a high professional standard.

As a Field Surveyor & Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Carrying out field surveying activities including topographical, cross sections, project set-out, as-built surveys, and general data collection
  • Processing survey data and preparing plans, drawings and reports
  • Assisting with determining and defining project scope and objectives and ensuring project deliverables are met
  • Developing resources needed to reach objectives and manage resources in an effective and efficient manner

About You

Our ideal candidate will have:
