The Night Car is seeking an experienced Asian chef to join our kitchen team in Auckland CBD. This full-time role focuses on maintaining high standards of Asian cuisine, leading kitchen operations, and delivering exceptional dining experiences for our guests.

Ideal candidates will bring strong Asian culinary skills, advanced knife techniques, and a commitment to food safety. You will train junior staff and contribute to menu development in a fast-paced, vibrant setting.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a professional chef in Asian cuisine.
  • Strong knowledge of Asian cooking methods, ingredients, and regional cuisines.
  • Advanced knife skills and proficiency with kitchen equipment.
  • Knowledge of food safety and health and safety regulations in commercial kitchens.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure during busy service periods.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, cook, and present a range of modern Asian dishes with precision and consistency.
  • Maintain the highest standards of food quality, presentation, and hygiene.
  • Manage food preparation, cooking techniques, and plating for prompt service.
  • Collaborate with the kitchen team to ensure smooth service during peaks.
  • Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering—especially Asian ingredients.
  • Adhere to all food safety regulations and kitchen policies.
  • Contribute to menu development and innovation.
  • Train and support junior kitchen staff.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the kitchen.

About the role

We are seeking an Experienced Asian Chef to join our kitchen team in a full-time position based in Auckland CBD. This is a key role within our culinary operations, where you will play an integral part in maintaining the high standards of Asian cuisine that define The Night Car. You will bring your expertise, creativity, and passion for modern Asian cooking to lead and contribute to our kitchen operations, ensuring every dish meets our exacting standards and delights our customers.

What you'll be doing
  • Preparing, cooking, and presenting a diverse range of modern Asian dishes with precision and consistency
  • Maintaining the highest standards of food quality, presentation, and hygiene in all kitchen operations
  • Managing food preparation, cooking techniques, and plating to ensure dishes are delivered promptly during service
  • Working collaboratively with the kitchen team to support smooth service flow and maintain efficiency during peak periods
  • Monitoring stock levels and assisting with food ordering, particularly Asian ingredients and specialist items
  • Adhering to all food safety regulations, health and safety standards, and internal kitchen policies
  • Contributing to menu development and innovation, bringing fresh ideas and techniques to enhance our Asian cuisine offerings
  • Training and supporting junior kitchen staff when required, sharing your knowledge and expertise
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organisation of the kitchen workspace and equipment
What we’re looking for
  • Proven experience as a professional chef, with substantial demonstrated expertise in Asian cuisine preparation and cooking techniques
  • Strong knowledge of Asian cooking methods, ingredients, flavour profiles, and regional cuisines
  • Advanced knife skills and proficiency with traditional and modern kitchen equipment
  • Sound understanding of food safety, hygiene standards, and health and safety regulations within commercial kitchens
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure during busy service periods whilst maintaining quality and consistency
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with kitchen and front-of-house staff
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail in food preparation and presentation
  • A passion for culinary excellence and continuous improvement in food quality and presentation
  • Relevant culinary qualifications or formal training in professional cooking are advantageous
  • Experience in hand‑made dumplings or noodles would be beneficial
