Job summary

Health New Zealand in Dunedin is seeking an experienced Equipment Nurse to join the Operating Theatres team on a 0.8–1.0 FTE fixed-term until September 2027. This role focuses on maintaining and managing surgical equipment and instrumentation to support safe patient care.

You will work with theatre staff, biomedical services and supplier reps, leading equipment testing, CAPEX processes, and providing education on equipment use; theatre experience and strong organisational skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Current registration as a Registered Nurse.
• Experience in operating theatre/perioperative nursing.
• Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and theatre equipment.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the management of surgical instrument trays and sets.
• Monitor and maintain theatre equipment inventory.
• Facilitate electrical safety testing and compliance of clinical equipment.
• Liaise with biomedical engineering and service providers regarding equipment maintenance and repairs.
• Collaborate with private company representatives regarding surgical equipment, consumables, and new technology.
• Assist with the evaluation, trial, and implementation of new equipment.
• Support the preparation and submission of Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) requests and business cases.
• Ensure equipment complies with organisational policies, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Provide education and support to theatre staff regarding equipment use and care.

This is an exciting opportunity for a registered nurse with theatre experience and a strong interest in surgical equipment management, clinical technology, and quality improvement.

About the Role

The Equipment Nurse will play a key role in ensuring theatre equipment and surgical instrumentation are maintained, managed, and available to support safe and effective patient care. Working closely with theatre staff, biomedical services, procurement teams, and medical device representatives, you will oversee the management of surgical equipment and instrumentation across the perioperative environment. This is a new role so it will develop as it goes.

About You

• Experience working with medical device suppliers and company representatives is desirable.
• Understanding of equipment procurement and CAPEX processes would be advantageous.
