Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

Beca's Environmental Advisory team is seeking an early-career Environmental Scientist with 2 - 4 years of professional experience. Based in Auckland or Wellington, this is an exciting opportunity to help solve real world client problems by combining your passion for the environment with your technical capabilities. Join a team with a reputation for excellence in practice, and a shared passion to understand and solve environmental issues.

This role will primarily work within our water quality discipline, with a focus on wastewater management for our major infrastructure clients and New Zealand's new water service entity operators. However, you can expect to support our broader environmental disciplines as required, which could offer exposure to a range of tasks such as water quality assessments, wetland or lizard surveys, and test pitting with the contaminated land team.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking team-based or independent field work at locations across the country
  • Environmental construction monitoring, and soil and/or water sampling
  • Completing desktop and site analyses to prepare technical reports which support a range of environmental projects, such as options assessments, resource consent applications and compliance
  • Maintaining and developing great relationships with internal and external clients.

As a Beca Environmental Scientist, you will join our national Environmental Advisory team. The team consists of trusted advisors, ecologists, water quality and air quality scientists, environmental specialists, and others in complementary disciplines such as sustainability, planning and engineering; all of whom are committed to achieving great environmental outcomes.

About you

You enjoy working with people from a range of backgrounds, but you are also a self-motivated individual with the ability to work independently as required. You are ambitious, eager to progress your career, and you relish the opportunity to work in an environment which encourages motivated, passionate, and enthusiastic consultants who want to make a difference.

Your background will include the following essential skills and experience:

  • Water quality experience, including with New Zealand's water quality legislative and planning frameworks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A tertiary degree in environmental science, chemistry, environmental engineering or a related discipline

Other desirable skills and experience include:

  • Undertaking freshwater ecology work in parallel with water quality assessments
  • Environmental management, compliance and monitoring, including erosion and sediment control practices
  • Collection of environmental samples (such as soil, groundwater, surface water, ecological/macroinvertebrates, sediment, and asbestos) via a range of methods, including hand auger, test pitting and drilling
  • Proven ability in data analysis including the use of software such as ESdat and GIS
  • Preliminary and Detailed Site Investigations
About us
  • A supportive and caring work environment where you can bring your whole self to work.
  • Flexible working arrangements to balance your personal/family commitments.
  • Opportunities to learn from our industry experts and technical gurus across NZ, Australia and the Asia Pacific.
  • A highly supportive environment of sharing and collaboration.
  • Excellent benefits provided to all staff – including discounted health insurance, discounts on gym memberships, and a number of social club events.
  • Beca prides itself on supporting a diverse and inclusive culture – we are open to inputs from creative people of all genders, ethnicity, identity, thought and experiences.
