Job summary

Civtec Limited is seeking an experienced Drill Operator/Locator to join our Christchurch team. You will bring strong directional drilling and utility locating capability, with a practical approach to problem-solving and a commitment to safety and quality.

The role requires flexibility for night work and rostered weekend work when needed, with opportunities to contribute to civil and utilities projects across telecommunications, three waters and energy sectors in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Qualifications

• At least 2–3 years’ practical experience operating directional drilling equipment and locating underground services.
• Previous experience in a civil construction or utilities environment.
• A current full New Zealand Class 1 driver licence with Wheels, Tracks and Rollers endorsements.

Responsibilities

• Operate directional drilling and related equipment per drawings and client requirements.
• Complete pre-start checks, permits, QA records and compliance documentation.
• Locate underground services and interpret utility plans and site information.
• Monitor progress and adjust operations to maintain alignment, productivity and quality.
• Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on drilling equipment.
• Work with the crew, supervisors and clients to achieve safe, efficient outcomes.
• Follow Civtec’s health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Drill Operator/Locator to join our Christchurch team. You will bring strong directional drilling and utility locating capability, a practical approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to completing work safely and to the required quality standards.

The role

Working both independently and alongside the wider crew, you will help deliver civil and utilities works safely, efficiently and in line with project requirements. This role requires flexibility to undertake night work and rostered weekend work when needed.

Key responsibilities

• Operate directional drilling and associated equipment to complete works in accordance with approved drawings, project specifications and client requirements.
• Complete pre-start checks, permits, quality assurance records and other required compliance documentation accurately and on time.
• Locate underground services and interpret utility plans and site information.
• Monitor drilling progress and adjust operations to maintain alignment, productivity and quality.
• Carry out routine inspections and preventative maintenance on directional drilling equipment.
• Work collaboratively with the crew, supervisors, clients and other site personnel to achieve safe and efficient project outcomes.
• Follow Civtec’s health, safety, environmental and quality requirements at all times.

What you will bring

• At least two to three years’ practical experience operating directional drilling equipment and locating underground services.
• Previous experience working in a civil construction or utilities environment.
• A current full New Zealand Class 1 driver licence.
• Wheels, Tracks and Rollers endorsements.
• A Class 2 driver licence and traffic management experience are preferred
• Good physical capability to safely do the work.
• Sound planning, judgement and problem-solving skills.
• Clear communication skills, a respectful approach and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• A strong commitment to health, safety, quality and looking after others.
