Job summary

Auckland Council is seeking up to two Board Members to join Tātaki Auckland Unlimited's governance team to help drive events, tourism and economic growth for Auckland.

You will provide governance oversight, work with management on strategic direction and ensure strong commercial performance and public accountability for the region. Auckland-based candidates are preferred, with knowledge of tikanga Māori valued to support inclusive growth and council objectives.

Qualifications

  • Sound governance experience and a strategic, big-picture view of governance for a council-controlled organisation.
  • Knowledge of commercial operations and experience liaising with senior stakeholders.
  • Experience overseeing digital/technological systems, including AI applications and data governance.
  • Experience in strategic city/regional marketing initiatives and delivering value for Auckland.
  • Commitment to public sector ethos, accountability and collaboration across the council family.
  • Willingness to engage with tikanga Māori and Maori networks to support engagement goals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide governance oversight of Tātaki Auckland Unlimited's events, tourism, and economic development activities.

Tātaki Auckland Unlimited is Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland's cultural, events and destination agency, working to grow the region's economy, sustain its cultural infrastructure and champion Auckland on the world stage. As a council-controlled organisation, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited plays a central role in delivering the council’s vision for events, destination marketing, venues, arts and culture, screen and tourism outcomes for Aucklanders.

We are seeking up to two new Board Members to join Tātaki Auckland Unlimited's governance team. These appointments come at an important time for Tātaki Auckland Unlimited as it continues to build the region's economic recovery through events, tourism and major projects, while ensuring strong commercial performance and public accountability.

Tātaki Auckland Unlimited's board provides governance oversight of the organisation's events, tourism, destination marketing, venues and economic development activity, working with management to set strategic direction and ensure Tātaki Auckland Unlimited delivers lasting value for the Auckland region.

He kōrero mōu | About you

Auckland Council is seeking candidates with sound governance experience and a genuine commitment to the wellbeing of Auckland. Ideally, candidates will bring:

  • Strong understanding of commercial operations, ideally with senior or executive level global or international business experience
  • A strategic, big picture view of the events and tourism sector and its role in driving economic growth for Auckland
  • Knowledge and experience overseeing digital and technological systems, including artificial intelligence applications
  • Experience effectively liaising with senior stakeholders within relevant industries
  • Experience in strategic city and regional marketing initiatives
  • The ability to take a "what is best for Auckland" perspective in decision making as well as understanding Council’s role as shareholder.

Knowledge of tikanga Māori suitable to guide and lead Tātaki Auckland Unlimited in its engagement with Māori stakeholders is also highly valued for at least one of these appointments.

As with all council-controlled organisation board appointments, candidates will be expected to demonstrate the core competencies for board members, including:

  • Extensive and relevant experience of industries and customers relevant to Tātaki Auckland Unlimited's operations
  • A passion for Auckland and a commitment to improving outcomes for Aucklanders
  • A readiness to uphold the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and promote improved outcomes for Māori, with knowledge of Te Ao Māori and established Māori networks
  • A commitment to public sector ethos, accountability and collaboration across the council-controlled organisation family
  • Financial accountability, with a close eye on delivering value for money
  • Commitment to integrating council's climate action plans into Tātaki Auckland Unlimited's strategy and operations
  • Leadership that harnesses the benefits of diversity
