Job summary

Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora's LabPlus in Auckland seeks a Medical Laboratory Technician within Diagnostic Genetics. You will support genetic testing by processing specimens, performing nucleic acid extraction, and handling data in a high‑reliability laboratory environment.

Qualifications

• Qualified Medical Laboratory Technician registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (or eligible for registration) and hold a current APC.
• Previous experience in a medical laboratory environment.
• Experience with molecular techniques, nucleic acid extraction, or diagnostic laboratory workflows would be advantageous.
• A strong commitment to accuracy, quality, and attention to detail.
• Ability to follow documented procedures and maintain a high standard of technical practice.
• Understanding of quality systems and laboratory accreditation requirements, including ISO 15189 principles.
• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• A collaborative approach and willingness to contribute to a positive team culture.
• Enthusiasm for learning new techniques and developing expertise within a specialised area of laboratory medicine.

Responsibilities

• Provide the essential technical foundation that enables scientists and pathologists to deliver genetic testing.
• Perform specimen processing and nucleic acid extraction.
• Manage laboratory workflows and data handling.
• Support quality management activities and operate specialized technologies.
• Work across chromosome analysis, microarray, molecular genetics, and sequencing portfolios.
• Collaborate with Medical Laboratory Scientists, Clinical Scientists, Pathologists and other healthcare professionals.
• Contribute to timely and reliable genetic testing results.
