Job summary

South Wairarapa District Council in Martinborough is seeking a Development Engineer with a civil engineering background to help grow our region’s infrastructure. You will assess development proposals, provide engineering and transport advice, and help ensure roading and development projects meet standards and legislative requirements.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Surveying, or related discipline.
  • 2–3 years' experience in development or infrastructure engineering.
  • Knowledge of legislation, NZS 4404, and council requirements.
  • Strong project management and stakeholder communication abilities.

Responsibilities

About the role

South Wairarapa District Council is seeking a highly capable Development Engineer to join our dynamic team in Martinborough. This is a full-time position that plays a crucial role in supporting South Wairarapa's growth, infrastructure development and transport objectives.

As a Development Engineer, you'll be responsible for assessing development proposals and providing expert engineering advice to support sustainable development across the South Wairarapa. This role is essential in ensuring that development and roading infrastructure are delivered to the require standard, meet legislative requirements and provide lasting value to our communities.

Key responsibilities include:

Assess and review resource consent, subdivision, and development applications, providing engineering and transport advice and recommending conditions where appropriate.

Ensure development and infrastructure works comply with legislative requirements, Council standards, NZS4404, and approved engineering designs.

Undertake site inspections and monitor development and roading projects through design, construction, and completion stages.

Provide technical advice and support to Council staff, developers, consultants, contractors, stakeholders, and the public on engineering and transport matters.

Prepare technical reports, recommendations, project documentation, and hearing evidence to support Council decision-making.

Contribute to the development of engineering standards, strategies, and future infrastructure programmes.

What we're looking for

A tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Surveying, or a related discipline.

2-3 years' experience in development or infrastructure engineering, preferably within a local government or regulatory environment.

Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, Council requirements, and engineering standards, including NZS 4404.

Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Excellent communication and stakeholder relationship skills, with the ability to provide practical advice and explain technical information clearly.

Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to review engineering plans and specifications.

Current full New Zealand driver's licence.
