Job summary

Horizon Services Limited (HSL) is seeking a Design Engineer Team Leader to lead network design, estimation, and project management for electricity distribution projects. Based in Matamata or Pukekohe, you will oversee the design of new connections, network upgrades, and capital works while mentoring Design and Graduate Engineers to maintain technical excellence.

About the role:

As a Design Engineer Team Leader, you'll lead the delivery of network design, estimation, and project management services across a range of electricity distribution projects. Based in either Matamata or Pukekohe , you'll oversee the design of new customer connections, network upgrades, subdivisions, and internal capital works while supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the distribution network.

Leading and mentoring Design Engineers and Graduate Engineers to support technical excellence and professional development

• Delivering detailed overhead and underground network designs, cost estimates, and engineering solutions for customer and internal projects
• Managing projects from concept through to completion, ensuring delivery within agreed budgets, timelines, and quality standards
• Preparing engineering calculations, construction work packs, technical reports, business cases, and recommendations
• Monitoring project performance, budgets, forecasting, and reporting through dashboards and management reporting tools
• Building strong relationships with customers, contractors, consultants, network stakeholders, and regulatory bodies
• Promoting a strong health and safety culture through audits, site observations, contractor oversight, and compliance activities
• Supporting continuous improvement initiatives, business growth opportunities, and the development of engineering standards and processes

About you:

You're a highly experienced power distribution professional with strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and a passion for delivering practical engineering solutions. You enjoy mentoring others, building strong stakeholder relationships, and driving projects through to successful completion.

• 5-10+ years' experience within the electricity distribution industry
• Tertiary engineering qualifications, preferably a Bachelor of Engineering
• Proven experience in power network design, estimation, project management, and contractor management
• Strong knowledge of overhead distribution design (e.g. NEARA or COLDNet design software), with exposure to underground network design and cost estimating
• Excellent communication, report writing, planning, and organisational skills
• Experience using engineering design, project costing, and reporting systems and software
• The ability to analyse technical challenges, make sound decisions, and identify practical solutions
• Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to motivate, coach, and develop technical teams
• A strong customer focus and commitment to delivering quality outcomes
• A current manual New Zealand driver's licence
