Permanent Data Engineer role reporting to Delivery Lead. This is a replacement position that has been internally reclassified because Data Engineer more accurately reflects the nature of the work. The role supports Client's Wholesale Markets business unit, a critical area of the organisation. The successful candidate will join a small team of three. The team manages a central collection of SQL Server databases that consolidate data from multiple applications, integrations and third‑party sources. The data is used to calculate energy margins, support trading decisions and enable analytical reporting for business stakeholders. This environment is centred on SQL Server. Essential technical expertise includes SQL Server, SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), SQL Stored Procedures, data integrations and maintenance of data pipelines. The current platform is hosted in AWS, although heavy use of AWS‑native data services is not expected.
Maintain and enhance business‑critical data products; ensure reliability and availability of data pipelines; troubleshoot failures caused by upstream third‑party data changes; coordinate fixes and updates; develop enhancements requested by business stakeholders; support changing market conditions and new energy initiatives such as wind farm projects; ensure data quality and operational stability while contributing to future technology evolution.
Client is actively evaluating the future direction of the platform. While SQL Server will remain important, technologies such as SSIS may be replaced over time. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute ideas, influence the roadmap and participate in technology modernisation initiatives.
Candidates should demonstrate curiosity regarding AI and how it can improve productivity, data engineering practices and data value delivery. Personal experimentation, learning initiatives and practical ideas for AI adoption will be viewed positively, although AI is not the primary focus of the role.
Pls note: A valid NZ work visa is a pre-requisite for all our positions as of now. In case any client is willing to sponsor an outstation international candidate, we would mention that separately.
