Job summary

Western Bay of Plenty District Council is seeking an enthusiastic regulatory professional to join the Environmental Consents team in the Bay of Plenty region. You will assess Building Consent applications for RMA purposes and contribute to processing Resource Consent applications, applying sound judgement and interpreting plans and legislation to help applicants navigate local government processes.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary degree in Resource Management Planning or similar.
  • Experience in consent processing under the Resource Management Act.
  • Understanding of the local government legislative framework.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong networking and consultative approach for relationships.
  • Ability to interpret plans and legal documents.

Responsibilities

  • Assess Building Consent applications for RMA purposes.
  • Process Resource Consent applications.
  • Apply sound judgement and interpret plans and legislation.
  • Assist applicants to navigate local government processes.

The opportunity

Do you have experience in a regulatory processing role? We’re looking for a motivated, positive and confident individual to join our Environmental Consents team, supporting work across the Western Bay of Plenty — one of the most rapidly growing regions in New Zealand.

This role has a strong focus on assessing Building Consent applications for RMA purposes, alongside a secondary component of processing Resource Consent applications. You’ll bring sound judgement, strong customer skills, and an ability to interpret plans and legislation to help people navigate the local government environment.

We’re interested in hearing from candidates with early career planner experience. This is a great opportunity to build practical experience in a local government context — managing straightforward work independently, and progressively taking on more complex or higher-risk matters with support and coaching from senior colleagues.

To set you up for success, you’ll have You will have great communication skills and the ability to relate to a wide cross section of the community.

You will have experience in a regulatory environment and skills in problem solving.

Desired skills and qualifications
  • Tertiary degree in Resource Management Planning or similar.
  • Experience in consent processing under the Resource Management Act.
  • A sound understanding of the local government legislative framework.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to present and explain ideas both visually and verbally.
  • A successful collaborator team player, and influencer.
  • Strong networking and consultative approach allowing development and maintenance of strong working relationships within and outside the organisation.
  • The ability to understand and interpret plans and legal documents.
