Western Bay of Plenty District Council – Tauranga, North Island

At Western Bay of Plenty District Council, everything we do is about making the everyday better - and helping our communities thrive, now and into the future.

Western Bay is a District undergoing significant growth and transformation. From planning for future communities to delivering the infrastructure that supports them, we're focused on getting the fundamentals right - and preparing for what comes next.

We're also focused on our people. At Western Bay, we believe in investing in and empowering our teams to grow, lead, and achieve their goals. Because when our people thrive, our communities do too.

If you're motivated by making the everyday better, helping people thrive, and leaving things better than you found them - we'd love to hear from you.

The opportunity

Do you have experience in a regulatory processing role? We're looking for a motivated, positive and confident individual to join our Environmental Consents team, supporting work across the Western Bay of Plenty - one of the most rapidly growing regions in New Zealand.

This role has a strong focus on assessing Building Consent applications for RMA purposes, alongside a secondary component of processing Resource Consent applications. You'll bring sound judgement, strong customer skills, and an ability to interpret plans and legislation to help people navigate the local government environment.

We're interested in hearing from candidates with early career planner experience. This is a great opportunity to build practical experience in a local government context - managing straightforward work independently, and progressively taking on more complex or higher-risk matters with support and coaching from senior colleagues.

To set you up for success, you'll have

You will have great communication skills and the ability to relate to a wide cross section of the community. You will have experience in a regulatory environment and skills in problem solving. The following skills and qualifications are also desirable:

  • Tertiary degree in Resource Management Planning or similar.
  • Experience in consent processing under the Resource Management Act.
  • A sound understanding of the local government legislative framework.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to present and explain ideas both visually and verbally.
  • A successful collaborator team player, and influencer.
  • Strong networking and consultative approach allowing development and maintenance of strong working relationships within and outside the organisation.
  • The ability to understand and interpret plans and legal documents.

Don't wait to take the leap into satisfying work. Bring your knowledge and skills to the Council and help our community build safe healthy sustainable environments.

What we offer
  • Five weeks annual leave (pro-rata)
  • A competitive employment package - including subsidised medical insurance
  • Flexible work arrangements and a pet friendly work environment
  • Learning and development opportunities
  • Access to wellbeing resources and workplace support
  • Free onsite parking
