Job summary

Rocket Lab in Auckland is seeking a hands-on Composite Technician to join the Production team. You will build, assemble and test components for the Electron rocket, working with laminates, prepregs and heat shields on both day and evening shifts.

You will apply drawings, measurements and quality standards to ensure on-time production, collaborating with a skilled team in a fast-paced environment. This role offers a dynamic, hands-on career at the forefront of space technology.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of relevant industry experience or trade qualification.
  • Precision lamination with prepregs.
  • Lamination prepregs and tooling prepregs; bagging knowledge for oven/autoclave cures.
  • Ability to read laminate/assembly drawings to ensure quality.
  • Experience with multi-layer insulation (MLI) and heat-shield materials.

Responsibilities

  • Build, assemble and test composite components for Rocket Lab Electron rockets.
  • Work with laminates, prepregs, tooling and heat shields to meet production schedules.
  • Interpret assembly drawings and ensure product quality on each part.
  • Contribute to overall production and launch readiness with accuracy and timeliness.

Job description

Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company delivering responsive launch services, complete spacecraft design and manufacturing, payloads, satellite components, and more - all with the goal of opening access space. The rockets and satellites we build, and launch enable some of the most ambitious and vital space missions globally, supporting scientific exploration, Earth observation and missions to combat climate change, national security, and exciting new technology demonstrations.

Our Electron rocket has become the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually and has delivered more than 230 satellites to orbit, all while we work to develop Neutron, our upcoming medium-lift, reusable launch vehicle for larger constellation deployment. Our Space Systems business designs and builds our extensive line of satellites, payloads, and their components, including spacecraft that have been selected to support NASA missions to the Moon and Mars and components used on the James Webb Space Telescope.

As part of the Production team at Rocket Lab, the Composites team is responsible for building and assembling numerous parts of the Electron rocket. From pressurized tanks, Structural Assemblies, Propellent Filters right through to Payload hardware and Heat shields. You will undertake all aspects of the build required during production, while adhering to Rocket Lab's High Standards of Quality, as well as meeting the schedule demand set out by the production leadership team.

As a Composite Technician, you will be hands on, working with tools, equipment and/or facilities to build, launch or test Rocket Lab launch vehicles or components. Your responsibilities contribute to the overall production and launch schedule.

We currently have openings on both our Day (Mon - Fri 06:00 - 14:30) and Evening (Mon - Thurs 15:00 - 01:30) shifts.

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:

  • Trade qualified in relevant industry or must be able to demonstrate 2+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Precision Lamination skills of prepreg systems
  • Precision Lamination skills of Tooling Prepreg systems
  • Knowledge of Bagging for oven and Autoclave cures
  • Interpret and apply laminate and assembly drawings to ensure product quality
  • Perform measurements and calculations used in a marine or composite workplace
  • Interpret and apply assembly drawings to ensure product quality
  • Previous experience in multi-layer insulation (MLI) and heat-shield materials

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • The ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as autonomously
  • Able to read, understand and follow manufacturing instructions and drawings

  • Computer literate, and comfortable using smartphones and tablets
