Job description

Lead one of New Zealand's most complex and strategically important operational assets.

Let’s take care of work that matters - people, place and purpose. From roads to recycling to reporting, everyone at WM New Zealand helps take care of our people, protect our whenua and support our communities.

We’re more than waste management – we’re problem solvers, innovators, and hands-on doers. Every one of us, whether behind the wheel, on the tools, or shaping strategy behind the scenes, is helping build a better Aotearoa.

Job Description
The role you’ll play.

You will play a key role in driving compliance with HSEQ systems, improving risk management practices, and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and sustainability.

This role combines field-level advisory support with coordination of key compliance activities to ensure we meet internal standards, legislative obligations, and customer expectations.

  • Provide guidance to managers and staff to ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality legislation and the company’s HSEQ Management System.
  • Conduct audits, inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations, ensuring corrective actions are followed through to completion.
  • Develop, review, and maintain safety documentation such as SOPs, JSEAs, hazardous substances registers, and compliance records.
  • Coordinate and deliver site-based HSEQ training, toolbox talks, and committee meetings.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies and third-party auditors and act as the primary contact for workplace incidents and injury case management.
  • Support the implementation of site emergency plans, business continuity plans, risk registers, and environmental management plans.
  • Promote and support sustainability initiatives aligned with the company’s circular economy goals and environmental targets.

Some travel around the regions would be required as the role will cover compliance responsibilities across multiple sites.

Qualifications
What you’ll need.

You’re a safety-focused professional with practical experience in HSEQ or compliance roles. You enjoy working both independently and as part of a team to support safe work environments and ensure robust systems are in place. You are confident communicating across all levels of the business and thrive in dynamic, operational environments.

As an ideal candidate you will have:

  • Strong working knowledge of HSEQ legislation, systems, and risk management processes.
  • Experience in safety audits, investigations, and development of corrective actions.
  • Excellent time management, organisational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to coach, train, and influence others in best practice safety behaviours.
  • Experience coordinating compliance and reporting tasks in operational or industrial settings.
  • Experience within manufacturing or processing industries is highly desirable.

To succeed, at your disposal you will have your direct report support team and wider operational team that includes office administration, supervisors and a mix of company and contracted operators. In this role, you will also be part of the regional leadership team and a strong corporate business that is recognised as one of the industry leaders.
