Job summary

Waste Management New Zealand is seeking an Environmental Analyst to help monitor environmental impacts and manage odour at a landfill and energy park location. The role reports to the Environmental Engineer onsite and involves field sampling, testing, and data-driven insights to support continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate holds a tertiary degree in environmental science or engineering, has a calibrated nose for odour, and possesses strong data management and MS Office skills.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in environmental science, engineering, or related discipline.
  • Proficiency with odour testing and adherence to procedures.
  • Strong data management and reporting skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate effectively.
  • Physically fit for outdoor work.
  • Driver's licence (NZ) is required or advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental sampling and analysis for air, water, and soil to support compliance.
  • Own odour monitoring, investigations of complaints, and reporting.
  • Operate odour control equipment per regulatory plans.
  • Prepare and dispatch samples for external laboratory analysis.
  • Coordinate with laboratories for timely and accurate results.
  • Support internal audits and external compliance reporting.
  • Assist Manager with other environmental projects.

Job Description

The role you’ll play.

As an Environmental Analyst, you’ll play a key role in monitoring environmental impacts, managing odour control, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Reporting to the Environmental Engineer onsite, you’ll carry out field sampling and testing, coordinate with laboratories, and provide analytical insights that support continuous improvement and environmental stewardship.

Key responsibilities.

  • Conducting environmental sampling and analysis across air, water, and soil to support compliance with consents and management plans.
  • Taking full ownership of odour monitoring, complaint investigations, and reporting.
  • Operating odour control equipment and ensuring full compliance with the Landfill Odour Management Plan.
  • Collecting, preparing, and dispatching environmental samples for external laboratory analysis.
  • Coordinating with laboratories to ensure efficient turnaround and accuracy of test results.
  • Contributing to internal audits and external compliance reporting.
  • Supporting other environmental projects as directed by the Manager.
Qualifications

What you’ll need.

  • A tertiary qualification in environmental science, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A “calibrated nose” for odour testing and the ability to follow procedures precisely.
  • Strong data management and reporting skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong coordination skills and ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions.
  • Experience in monitoring, testing, or laboratory support roles is highly advantageous.
  • Hold a Full New Zealand driver’s licence.
