Job summary

Multiple Sclerosis Auckland Inc. Takapuna, North Island, seeks a Community Advisor to provide customised support and guidance to people affected by MS and their whānau. You will navigate health and community services, offer practical information, and connect clients with credible resources.

Ideal candidates will have a health background, strong communication and group facilitation skills, and the ability to work with vulnerable populations, both one-on-one and in workshops.

Qualifications

  • Ideally qualified in one of the following: Social Work, Nursing, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, Speech Language Therapist, or other health background.
  • Good knowledge of the health system and experience in community work.
  • Experience in working one-on-one with clients, particularly those in vulnerable situations.
  • Experience in facilitating groups and seminars.
  • Highly proficient verbal, written, presentation and listening skills.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills with strong decision making abilities.
  • Computer skills and technical competency
  • Stress and time management skills with the ability to be self-directed and work unsupervised
  • Current, clean driver's licence and subject to a clear Police check
  • Empathetic and caring, non-judgemental, with high degree of integrity and sound work ethics

Responsibilities

  • Provide customised support, guidance, connections and advocacy to people impacted by MS in Auckland
  • Provide practical non-clinical information and guidance to people with MS, their whānau, caregivers, employers, and friends
  • Support people to navigate local health and community services and promote achievable positive lifestyle changes
  • Provide referrals and recommendations into the best network of supports and connections for members and their whānau
  • Respond in a timely fashion to incoming member enquiries and provide proactive contact to those members who have requested to be contacted at intervals
  • Maintain current knowledge of credible services and programmes of interest to the MS community
  • Assist with workshops, events and other programmes organised by MS Auckland
  • Maintain accurate and up to date client records and ensure this remains confidential and secure
  • Produce monthly reports on activities conducted and provide relevant information for MS Auckland external communications
  • Participate in staff training as required and involvement in regular supervision and annual appraisal process

Multiple Sclerosis Auckland Inc – Takapuna, North Island

The Community Advisors are a team of professionals who provide information, guidance and support exclusively to people impacted by multiple sclerosis. As MS affects everyone differently, the Community Advisor team supports the person with multiple sclerosis, and those close to them, to navigate how MS impacts their lives in a non-clinical context. The Community Advisors listen and learn without judgement. They utilise their extensive knowledge, experience and unique perspective to provide salient guidance, resources, referrals and connections to help support the best outcomes at the present time and for what is around the corner. The goal of Community Advisor intervention is that people living with MS are empowered, equipped, supported and informed to move forward on their MS journey with confidence.
