We're here to give peace of mind through timely access to quality care, inspire healthier living, and lead positive change across the health system. As a New Zealand‑owned, member‑based organisation, we're building a future where wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do -- delivering exceptional value for our members and creating an environment where our people thrive. Now is an exciting time to join us. You'll be part of a high‑performing, values‑driven team where people are at the heart of everything we do -- and in return for your talent, you'll have the opportunity to grow, make an impact, and be proud of the difference your work makes.

About the role

Southern Cross is guided by purpose, powered by people and technology. We're here to help almost one million members across Aotearoa New Zealand live well for longer - work with real scale, real responsibility, and a real opportunity to make a meaningful difference. As we accelerate our shift to a cloud‑first, Azure‑based technology estate, we're looking for an Azure Cloud Engineer to help maintain a resilient, cost‑effective and continuously improving cloud infrastructure. This role plays a key part in our insourcing strategy - strengthening internal capability and supporting future cloud initiatives. This is a hands‑on engineering role for someone who wants to design, build and support enterprise‑grade Azure solutions, and who enjoys turning platform improvements, automation and self‑service into real operational impact.

About the role Reporting to the Infrastructure Platforms Lead, you'll design and implement scalable, secure and highly available cloud solutions, and manage and monitor our Azure infrastructure for optimal performance and cost‑efficiency. You'll collaborate on new platform features and infrastructure improvements, enhancing self‑service, automation and standardisation, while also owning issue resolution - troubleshooting platform issues, performing root cause analysis, and implementing sustainable fixes.

What you'll do
  • Design and implement scalable, secure, and highly available Azure cloud solutions
  • Manage and monitor Azure infrastructure for optimal performance and cost‑efficiency
  • Collaborate on new platform features and infrastructure improvements
  • Enhance platform capabilities for self‑service, automation, and standardisation
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve platform‑related issues
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement sustainable solutions
  • Manage incident processes and communicate with stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain platform documentation, ensuring it's up‑to‑date and accessible
  • Continuously monitor and optimise platform performance and scalability, identifying bottlenecks and implementing improvements
What you’ll bring
  • Deep working knowledge of Azure as our primary cloud: subscriptions and management groups, networking, identity (Entra ID, RBAC, managed identities), storage, Azure Monitor, and both IaaS and PaaS compute with the ability to design, build and support enterprise‑grade solutions
  • Expertise in Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, Ansible or Pulumi to automate infrastructure provisioning and configuration
  • Working knowledge of Azure networking: VNets, subnets, NSGs, route tables and peering; Private Link and Private Endpoints with Private DNS zone design; load balancing and delivery across Azure Load Balancer, Application Gateway, Front Door and Traffic Manager, with WAF policies; and hybrid connectivity via ExpressRoute and VPN Gateway
  • Experience with Azure App Services, Function Apps, API Management, and related PaaS offerings
  • Familiarity with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics and Application Insights for proactive performance monitoring, incident management, and root cause analysis
  • Knowledge of Azure security best practices, including RBAC, Managed Identities, Key Vault, and networking security controls (firewalls, NSGs)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools for automating software delivery processes
  • Strong scripting and automation skills (e.g. Python, Shell, PowerShell) to streamline operational tasks and reduce manual intervention
  • Excellent problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a willingness to work across cross‑functional teams/ vendors and share knowledge with others
