Job description

About the Role:

Kickstart your career in civil construction with an "earn while you learn" apprenticeship managed by the Apprenticeship Training Trust (ATT) and hosted by Isaac Construction. This is an entry-level position perfect for someone who is ready to learn, enjoys being outdoors, and wants to build a long-term career in infrastructure.

Get hands-on experience, choose a specialization track, and become a fully qualified infrastructure worker with zero student debt! Areas of Specialisation

Depending on business needs and your interests, you will focus your training in one of four key areas:

  • Surfacing: Get hands‑on with our expert asphalt paving and chip sealing crews to build high‑quality, durable road surfaces.
  • Civil Construction: Master the groundwork by getting stuck into earthworks, trenching, and preparing the foundations for local roads and footpaths.
  • Drainage & Water: Build essential underground networks by learning to safely install, replace, and maintain pipes, manholes, and water systems.
  • Kerb & Channel (Dunedin based): Step straight into a major city‑wide contract, working with a fast‑paced team to upgrade Dunedin’s street infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities

Safety and teamwork are at the core of everything we do. On a day‑to‑day basis, you will be expected to:

  • Prioritize Safety: Strictly adhere to the Health and Safety at Work Act at all times.
  • Follow Procedures: Comply with all Isaac Construction and site‑specific health and safety processes.
  • Work Safely: Consistently work in a safe manner, actively looking out for your own well‑being and that of your crew.
  • Support the Crew: Assist your team with all daily operational tasks and manual labour relevant to your specific work area.
What You Will Learn and Achieve

We are committed to your professional development. Throughout your apprenticeship, you will complete two formal Connexis qualifications:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Level 2)
  • New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Level 3) — Specializing in either Civil, Pipeline Construction Maintenance, or Bitumen Surfacing.
You will also earn essential industry tickets, including:
  • Wheels, Tracks, and Rollers (WTR) endorsements
  • Comprehensive First Aid Certificate
  • Site Safe Foundation Passport
Commitment to Study:

Please note that achieving these qualifications requires a commitment to completing theory‑based coursework and assessments, which may require study outside of standard working hours.

Who We Are Looking For

You do not need previous construction experience, but you do need the right attitude. We are looking for someone who meets the following criteria:

  • Requirements: Must be at least 18 years old and hold a Full Class 1 New Zealand Driver's License.
  • Work Ethic: Punctual, reliable, and capable of putting in a solid, full day of work.
  • Physical Fitness: Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and physically capable of lifting loads and manual labour.
  • Clear Communication: Able to listen carefully, follow instructions, and communicate effectively with the crew to ensure site safety around heavy machinery.
  • Initiative: A proactive thinker who anticipates the next step and looks for ways to help before being told.
  • Ready to Learn: Brings a positive, coachable attitude to the site every day.
Bonus Points (Not essential, but a great advantage):
  • Previous experience working in farming or agriculture.
  • Background in team sports (like rugby) where teamwork and communication are key.
  • Familiarity with large vehicles or heavy machinery.
What We Provide
  • Complete Outfitting: Full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided.
  • Structured Support: A comprehensive induction process to get you safely set up on day one.
  • Regular Check-ins: A dedicated review with ATT every six weeks to ensure you are progressing and supported.
  • Academic Help: Invitations to join study groups to help you tackle the coursework for your Connexis qualifications.
Pre-Employment Checks:

Successful applicants will be required to pass a pre‑employment medical, drug and alcohol screening, and a Ministry of Justice criminal record check.
