Job summary

Palmerston North City Council in Palmerston North, North Island, seeks a Building Officer – Commercial to ensure building work complies with the Building Act across the city. You will review consents, carry out inspections, and provide practical technical advice to developers, engineers, architects and the public.

Qualifications

• Qualification in building design, construction, building surveying or a related field at NZQA Level 6 or higher.
• Strong understanding of Building Statutes, Codes and Standards and their practical application.
• Experience in the building or building-related industry.
• Experience and certified competency in processing and/or inspecting up to NCAS Level C1 Building Consents.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills with diverse stakeholders.
• A full New Zealand Driver Licence.

We have an opportunity for a Building Officer – Commercial to join our Development & Regulatory Group.

In this role, you’ll help ensure building work across our city meets the required standards under the Building Act. You’ll work across the building consent process, reviewing documentation, processing consents and carrying out site inspections to ensure building work complies with relevant legislation, standards and Council requirements.

You’ll also be a trusted source of technical advice, working with developers, engineers, architects, consultants, tradespeople and members of the public to help achieve safe, compliant building outcomes.

This is a full-time role, 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

Your focus in this role will include:

• Reviewing and processing building consent applications in line with statutory and Council requirements.
• Carrying out inspections of building work to assess compliance with relevant building legislation and standards.
• Providing clear, practical building-control advice to customers and industry professionals.
• Investigating and responding to building-related queries and complaints professionally and within appropriate timeframes.
• Keeping up to date with changes to building legislation, codes of practice and relevant industry standards.

You’re an experienced building professional with strong technical knowledge and an eye for detail. You’re comfortable applying building legislation and standards in a practical environment and enjoy working with a wide range of people to achieve positive outcomes.

What you will bring:

• A relevant recognised qualification in building design, construction, building surveying or a related field at NZQA Level 6 or above, or be working towards an appropriate recognised qualification.
• A good understanding of relevant Building Statutes, Codes and Standards and their practical application.
• Experience in the building or a building-related industry.
• Experience and certified competency in processing and/or inspecting up to NCAS Level C1 Building Consents/work would be highly desirable.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of customers and stakeholders.
• A full New Zealand Driver Licence.
