Job summary

Waikato District Council is seeking an experienced Building Inspector to join our Field Team. Based near Hamilton, you will inspect residential and commercial projects, assess compliance with the Building Act and Building Code, and provide guidance to builders, developers and property owners.

You will balance regulatory requirements with practical construction knowledge, contribute to safe, high‑quality outcomes, and maintain detailed inspection records.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in building inspection, building surveying, compliance, construction, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of NZ construction practices, Building Act 2004, Building Code, and consent processes.
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, and technical documentation with sound judgement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with customers, contractors and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct residential and commercial building inspections across all stages of construction.
  • Assess building work against approved plans, building consents, and relevant legislation.
  • Ensure compliance with the New Zealand Building Code and Building Act.
  • Identify non-compliant building work and issue appropriate corrective actions.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Provide technical guidance to builders, contractors, and customers.
  • Review documentation and support the consent and compliance process.
  • Contribute to positive customer experiences through professional engagement.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and competency assessments.

Job description

Te Kaunihera aa Takiwaa o Waikato (Waikato District Council) serves the Waikato District which covers more than 400,000 hectares (418.893ha). It borders Hamilton City from the north, east and west. There are 2,422 kilometres of roads which you can travel throughout the district.

Our Head Office is based in Ngaaruawaahia, just 10 minutes North of Hamilton, so with no traffic or parking issues, your journey to and from work is stress free.

We're seeking an experienced Building Inspector to join our high-performing team and play a key role in ensuring residential and commercial building projects meet New Zealand's regulatory and safety standards.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong construction background who enjoys working in the field, building relationships, and helping deliver safe, compliant, and high-quality building outcomes. Whether you're currently working in a Council, Building Consent Authority (BCA), consultancy, or the wider construction sector, we'd love to hear from you.

As a Building Inspector, you'll undertake building inspections, assess compliance with the Building Act, Building Code, approved plans, and consent requirements, and provide technical guidance to builders, developers, consultants, and property owners. You'll balance regulatory requirements with practical construction knowledge while contributing to safe and sustainable communities.

What will I do?

What will I bring?
  • Proven experience in building inspection, building surveying, compliance, construction, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of New Zealand construction practices, building legislation, the Building Act 2004, Building Code, and the broader local government regulatory environment
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, and technical documentation, applying sound judgement, attention to detail, and effective decision-making
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships and work collaboratively with customers, contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders
  • Confident using industry technology, inspection systems, and report-writing tools
  • Experience as a Building Control Officer or Building Inspector within a Council or BCA environment is desirable
  • NCAS competency in Residential and Commercial inspections (Levels 1-3), or a willingness to develop and obtain these competencies
  • Full New Zealand Driver Licence

Additional Information:

Salary circa $95K dependent on skills and experience.
