Job summary

New Plymouth District Council is seeking a Building Inspector to join our Consents & Regulatory Team. This permanent, full-time role blends field-based inspections with technical assessment to ensure buildings comply with the Building Act, Building Code and Council policies.

You will work closely with homeowners, builders and developers, guiding projects from consent through to completion while upholding safety, quality, and service standards. A tertiary qualification in this area is required.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification relevant to the interpretation and application of the Building Act 2004.
• Experience in building consent processes, preferable within a local authority.

Responsibilities

• Undertake scheduled inspections and advise building practitioners with regard to building practice.
• Provide technical advice to customers and respond to enquiries as required.
• Actively ensure that legislative requirements and Council policies and procedures are fulfilled, particularly in relation to all key relevant legislation.

Join our Consents & Regulatory Team as a Building Inspector and play a vital role in helping shape a safe, sustainable and thriving community.

This permanent, full-time position offers a rewarding mix of field-based inspections and technical assessment work, where no two days are the same. You'll be responsible for carrying out building inspections and processing building consent applications, ensuring all work complies with the requirements of the Building Act, Building Code and Council policies and procedures.

As a trusted subject matter expert, you'll work closely with homeowners, builders, developers and industry professionals to support quality building outcomes across our district. Your expertise and customer-focused approach will help guide projects from consent through to completion, while maintaining high standards of safety, compliance and service.
