Job summary

Auckland Council's Field Surveying team in Manukau seeks an experienced Building Surveyor/Inspector to own and manage inspections across the coverage area. You will travel regionally, receive training, and exercise autonomy to ensure safe, compliant outcomes for builders, homeowners, architects, and developers.

The role requires knowledge of the Building Act and Code, strong communication, and a customer-focused approach.

Qualifications

  • National Diploma in Building Control Surveying or equivalent (IANZ accepted).
  • At least 5 years cumulative experience in a building-related environment.
  • Strong knowledge of the Building Act, Building Code, and structural integrity concepts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to interact with stakeholders.
  • Full, clean NZ Driver's License.

Our Field Surveying team based in Manukau is seeking an experienced building industry professionals to join their team as a Building Surveyor/ Inspector, to take ownership and manage part of their varied portfolios.

You will be responsible for conducting building inspections across your coverage area,to ensure compliance with all relevant legislative and safety requirements. You will have the opportunity to travel around the region, receive comprehensive training and support, and the autonomy to make necessary decisions so that our customers can experience a seamless process with us. You will be working with clients from various sectors of the development community, such as builders, homeowners, architects and developers, providing them with the proper guidance and advice on compliant building practices.

Day-to-day you could expect to work on:

  • Inspect building work to ensure compliance with building consents, building codes,building consent authority’s ‘BCA’ policies,and other legislative requirements, and make appropriate technical decisions on inspection outcomes
  • Help increase customer understanding of the building code and Council processes by providing accurate and timely advice in a customer centric manner
  • Apply sound reasons for decisions and maintain accurate, robust records of inspections


This role requires experience in building related roles, with a sound understanding of building construction, structural integrity, the Building Code, and the Building Act. We are looking for someone who has deep industry knowledge and is motivated by helping others understand and meet these requirements. You will need to apply strong technical knowledge, communication skills, and a customer-focused approach to everything you do.We will be looking for specific experience with:

  • Relevant qualification(s) such as the National Diploma in Building Control Surveying, an equivalent professional qualification (IANZ accepted). Or be willing to work towards achieving the necessary qualifications
  • At least 5 years of cumulative experience in a building related environment
  • A comprehensive understanding of the Building Act, Building Code, and technical & structural integrity aspects of construction standards or building design would be an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and a proven ability to interact with a range of stakeholders
  • Strong customer service focus with a solution-oriented approach, while upholding high ethical standards during inspections and enforcement activities
  • The ability to manage competing demands and resolve conflicts effectively
  • A full, clean NZ Driver’s License is required to travel to different inspection sites

The remuneration range for this role is $91,027 – $100,000 per annum (Based on skills & experience)
