Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

Umbrellar Technology Group has a proud history of over 29 years of providing best in class engineering for cloud and IT infrastructure in NZ. With a focus on Microsoft Azure and our VMware data centres, we offer customers in-depth managed and professional cloud services, along with Data and AI services.

We are a focussed team which values teamwork, individual empowerment, learning, proactivity, and the highest ethical standards. We encourage diversity and equal opportunity within our team.

We offer a supportive and learning-based environment within our small but focussed team, along with an attractive benefits package including medical insurance, life insurance and ten days bonus annual leave on top of your standard twenty days.

The Role

We are after a doer and a passionate Engineer. If your best days at work are the ones where a migration cuts over cleanly and the landing zone deployed straight from the pipeline, this is the job. If you have a interest in the latest technology and want to be involved in Microsoft Fabric (Data) and Foundry (AI) projects.

Azure is the focus, but this isn't a narrow, single-platform role. Our customers run a broad estate, so you will also work across our VMware managed compute platform, Windows and Linux servers, networking and identity. Alongside project work you will be a senior escalation point for our support team and take part in our on‑call roster.

Day to day you will:

  • Build, configure, migrate and test Azure environments on customer projects, and see them through to a clean cutover.
  • Deliver migrations from on-premises and VMware into Azure, covering landing zone build, workload migration, testing and post‑migration validation.
  • Build as code, using Bicep (or Terraform where a customer needs it), PowerShell and Azure CLI, deployed through Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions pipelines.
  • Improve the IaC modules, pipelines and accelerators the rest of the team builds from, so the next build is faster than the last.
  • Put governance and guardrails in as part of the build: Azure Policy, RBAC, Defender for Cloud and cost controls.
  • Work directly with customer technical teams through the build, and keep them informed.
  • Act as a senior technical escalation point when the support team hits something hard.
  • Take part in a rostered on‑call roster, and carry out scheduled and emergency after‑hours maintenance and out‑of‑hours cutovers.
  • Write as‑builts and runbooks good enough to hand over.
What we are looking for
  • Minimum 3 plus years’ hands‑on experience building and operating Azure environments. More is welcome, and we will place the right person at the right level.
  • A track record of work you have delivered yourself. We would rather hear about a migration you ran and what broke than a strategy you contributed to.
  • Azure depth across IaaS and PaaS: virtual networking and connectivity, Entra ID, storage, compute, backup and DR, monitoring and security.
  • Strong Infrastructure as Code and automation: Bicep, ARM or Terraform, plus PowerShell and/or Azure CLI, with source control and CI/CD experience. We weight this heavily and it can offset fewer years.
  • Strength alongside the Azure depth: Windows and Linux server administration, virtualisation (VMware or equivalent), networking, storage and identity.
  • Experience delivering Azure migrations and landing zone builds for external customers.
  • Experience in consulting, professional services or project delivery, working to a SOW, an estimate and a plan.
  • Experience as a technical escalation point and on an on‑call roster.
  • Clear written and spoken communication. You will be in front of customer technical teams regularly.
Nice to have
  • Azure certifications. AZ-104 as a baseline, with AZ-305 or AZ-500 a bonus.
  • Azure Policy, management groups, Defender for Cloud and Azure Landing Zone accelerators at scale.
  • Azure Monitor, Log Analytics and KQL.
  • Containers and modern platforms: AKS, Container Apps and App Service.
  • Microsoft 365, Intune and Azure Virtual Desktop.
  • FinOps and cloud cost optimisation.
  • Using AI-assisted engineering tooling to move faster.
Employment criteria you must have
  • This role deals with customers on a daily basis and requires excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A current New Zealand driver’s licence.
  • Pass a Ministry of Justice check.
  • New Zealand citizenship or residency, and be based in New Zealand. We are not able to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
  • Willingness to take part in an on‑call roster and to carry out after‑hours work when a project or incident requires it.
