Job summary

Suncorp New Zealand is seeking an Assistant Underwriter - Distribution to support profitable growth of our SME commercial portfolio, strengthen broker relationships and deliver outstanding customer outcomes in Auckland.

You will review risks, make underwriting decisions, collaborate with intermediaries and internal teams, and contribute to digitisation and process improvements to enhance the broker and customer experience.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years' experience in commercial underwriting.
• Strong understanding of the NZ commercial insurance market.
• Ability to build and maintain relationships with brokers and partners.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Customer-first mindset with focus on positive outcomes.
• Experience with Vero systems advantageous.
• Insurance industry qualifications or tertiary qualifications advantageous.

We're looking for an experienced Assistant Underwriter - Distribution to join our Business Distribution team and play a key role in supporting profitable growth, strengthening intermediary relationships, and delivering outstanding customer outcomes.

This is an exciting opportunity open across Auckland for a commercially minded underwriting professional who enjoys building strong broker relationships, making informed underwriting decisions, and contributing to the growth of a leading insurance portfolio.

As an Assistant Underwriter, you'll support the management and growth of our SME commercial insurance portfolio, working closely with intermediaries, customers and internal stakeholders to deliver effective underwriting solutions and exceptional service.

You’ll

• Review and assess SME commercial insurance risks and provide underwriting support on renewal and new business opportunities.
• Make informed underwriting decisions that support profitable portfolio growth.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and intermediary partners to support retention and growth outcomes.
• Deliver positive customer outcomes by providing timely, accurate and customer-focused service.

What You'll Bring

• Minimum 3 years' experience in commercial underwriting.
• Strong understanding of the New Zealand commercial insurance market.
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with brokers and business partners.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
• Sound commercial acumen and knowledge of underwriting and sales principles.
• A customer-first mindset with a focus on achieving positive outcomes.
• Experience with Vero systems will be highly regarded.
• Relevant insurance industry qualifications and/or tertiary qualifications will be advantageous.
