Job summary

Franklin Smith in New Zealand is seeking multiple experienced Asphalt Plant Operators to support road construction and other projects. You will work closely with Foremen to ensure safety and on-time delivery of asphalt materials across diverse sites.

Successful candidates must be NZ citizen or resident with at least 3 years’ Asphalt Plant Operation experience and hold a Class 2 driver license. Minimum 30 hours per week, up to 70 hours, with hourly wages of NZD 28.00–35.00.

Qualifications

• NZ citizen or resident and have at least 3 years full-time Asphalt Plant Operation work experience.
• Hold a Class 2 driver license.

Responsibilities

• Operate Class 2 machinery and a range of asphalt plant equipment.
• Work closely with the Foreman and Leading Hand to ensure projects are completed safely and on schedule.
• Operate asphalt pavers, ensuring correct setup, alignment, and consistent material flow to meet specified levels and compaction requirements.
• Assist with the operation and adjustment of side screeds, including setting widths, managing extensions, and maintaining correct levels and falls.
• Monitor mat quality during paving, including thickness, temperature, and finish, and make real-time adjustments as required.
• Coordinate with truck drivers and ground crew to ensure a steady and efficient supply of asphalt to the paver.
• Carry out pre-start checks and routine maintenance on equipment, including pavers, rollers, tractor brooms, crew cabs, and Class 2 trucks.
• Assist with plant operations, including spotting for machinery movements and maintaining safe working distances.
• Support manual tasks on site, including breaking up asphalt in areas inaccessible to machinery.
• Perform shovelling and screeding of asphalt where required to achieve required finish.
• Maintain a clean and tidy worksite at all times.
• May operate other civil machines/vehicles and perform manual labouring.
