Job summary

Timescapes is seeking a Senior Automation & AI Engineer in Auckland, NZ (hybrid). You will lead AI and data initiatives across the company, solving high-leverage problems with agentic AI and automation, while spanning multiple teams and systems, and bringing in vendors when appropriate.

You’ll scope work, build quickly where fastest, and own the implementation end-to-end, with reporting to the Co-founder/CTO and a path to the COO role.

Qualifications

• 5+ years across automation, data, analytics engineering or related roles.
• Portfolio of builds; ability to walk stakeholders through them.
• Experience in fast-moving SaaS/startup environments with end-to-end ownership.
• Experience scoping and managing external vendors/contractors.
• Construction or hardware industry experience is a bonus, not required.
• Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.

Responsibilities

• Find and frame the work by partnering with Sales, Marketing, Customer Success, Service Delivery, Field Service, Finance and Product to identify friction with real payoff.
• Define new ways of operating by evaluating AI/automation options and what they change in our processes.
• Map and understand value flow before automating, including undocumented parts.
• Build and deploy agentic AI workflows, automations and internal tools across systems; measure outcomes and iterate.
• Take ongoing ownership of your built systems, ensuring reliability and maintainability.
• Manage vendors/contractors when buying is better than building, and own relationships end-to-end.
• Understand the stack (HubSpot, Odoo, Chargebee, MotherDuck, platform) and costs; optimise accordingly.
• Enablement: lead by example, run sessions, upskill teams; guardrails: privacy, security, cost transparency.
• You will not own admin for business systems; ensure information and automation flows between systems.
• In first year, replace manual processes with end-to-end flows used daily; teams work with customers onsite; processes improve and friction points vanish.
