Job summary

WM New Zealand is seeking an Accounts Assistant reporting to the Commercial Manager. You will own accounts functions for the Joint Venture Midwest Disposal Services, focusing on invoicing, credit control, purchasing, and month-end deadlines.

You’ll review processes, manage data from multiple sources, and support operations, commercial and finance teams. The role emphasizes teamwork in a small two-person unit with opportunities for professional development.

Qualifications

• Five years of work experience, ideally in a large complex organization with tight month-end deadlines.
• Strong Excel and data analysis skills.
• Ability to collate and analyse data from multiple sources and systems.
• Excellent time management and commercial skills.
• Good verbal and written communication abilities.
• Ability to explain accounting issues to non‑accountants.
• Team player but able to work autonomously.
• Knowledge of construction, logistics, or waste industries an advantage.
• Interest in learning new systems and processes.

Responsibilities

• Review and implement processes and procedures with robust internal controls.
• Ensure timely and accurate month-end recording and reporting, including standardization improvements.
• Manipulate data from customers’ and weighbridge data to complete invoicing.
• Handle customer queries, credit control and debt collection.
• Record transactions, raise purchase orders, accounts payable and liaise with suppliers.
• Process bank account transactions and conduct investigations.
• Support general office management tasks.
• Assist with JV external reporting, audits and annual tasks.
• Support Operations, Commercial and Finance Managers.
• Work in a team of two with cross-functional knowledge-sharing.
